This was the textbook recommended by my school, and I think most State Boards recommend it.Thanks to being a textbook, it's extremely expensive. I read it front to back, and felt that I got either the same or even better information from free and inexpensive sources. If you want a version that's 10% the price, but at least 60 years older, try "Practice and Science of Standard Barbering" by Sidney Coyne Thorpe for less than 20 bucks. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1407657216/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2The only parts that are slightly more up to date in this version are the haircut exercises and several heat and chemical procedures—which barbers mostly never perform. If you'd like to learn more about haircutting, I recommend starting with Scissors and Comb Haircutting. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0916819019/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_15 Then, to learn barbering techniques such as scissor-over-comb, blending with clippers, and various razor techniques, check out Greg Zorian's Master of Barbering (or, Howtocuthair.tv). These are less than half the price combined, and I felt silly buying this textbook before them.If you'd like to learn more about the structure of men's hair and how it grows, ignore the disconnected bits of anatomy in this textbook. Check out The Men's Hair Book. It even has recipes for homemade shampoos. http://www.amazon.com/Mens-Hair-Book-Grooming-Products/dp/1482783339/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1426784533&sr=1-1&keywords=men%27s+hairAll in all, you can get a comprehensive education with far more relevant information for less than $100.If the publishers want some direct feedback:- Make the anatomy and biology sections more relevant to barbering. Don't just tell us what types of bacteria exist. That's what 11th grade biology is for. Tell us how there's a risk of spreading each one in a shop. Give us case studies. Tell us how their transmission is different. Likewise, relate the anatomy sections more directly. We need to know these muscle groups because we will be manipulating them with massages, and we need to know the neck muscles to avoid injuring clients when turning their heads. Make that the primary learning objective, rather than some rote trivia game.- The haircutting section needs to be at least twice as big. It's very difficult to keep up with modern styles, but there should at least be some explanation of how one blends with clippers. There isn't. Changing the angle of the clippers, holding the comb differently, changing the size of the blade—these can all be incorporated into the existing procedures you have. The reality is that a person simply cannot start cutting hair after reading your chapter, whereas after reading other books, they can. Learn from those books.- The shaving section is egregious. This is a problem that extends to the State Boards. We have known that men have different growth patterns and that those patterns must be followed for over a century, yet this fetish with the 14 strokes persists. Teach us how to shave humans, not theoretical dummies. If we were to use the 14 strokes as they are on a practice client with reverse beard growth in sections 2 and 7, it could cause an injury if the hair is thick enough. Likewise, a LOT of men do not have any upwards growth on their lower neck; given how sensitive the area is, it would be wiser to emphasize going with the grain.- The price for the Kindle version should not be so high. That's abnormal, and considering how good the competition is, it's worth it for you to adjust.

the reason for the two stars now.. are that i purchased this book last year the digital version for some reason this book stop syncing across my devices...it will not sync my highlights or bookmarks...i have other books that have no problem syncing please fix Amazon.com orderDigital Order: July 19, 2016

David Abrams takes us on a journey back to ourselves and the route passes between the Scylla and Charybdis of discursive language. Abrams' thesis is that phonetic writing and the language associated with it separate us from the natural world. The primitive had language tied to the hunt and landscape; the modern has language in books and in his cerebrum. In one of the longer acts of irony I have ever observed, Abrams uses exquisite language to return us to an appreciation of and participation in the natural, "more than human" world from which he claims language has estranged us. His examples are marvelous. Consider the Judaic scholars of the early middle ages, penning their Torahs and other documents without vowels; this syntactical arrangement forced the reader to consider where "the wind is to blow" and in so blowing infuse language with the creative wind of God. But we are far from that today. Now we must put down our books, listen to the wind, and consider the hawk on its windhover. If we do we are returned to ourselves.

This book is probably one of the best books written. and I am a huge bibliophile. I wish I was eloquent at giving review because I can't give enough praise for Abram's work. He writes beautifully, and with excellent sources and scholarship, about the natural world and our perceptions and place in it. If this book were food - I'd eat it up. If you are looking to fall in love with the natural world in a way that changes your own - get ready for the most amazing ride.

A fascinating analysis of how written phonetic language has contributed to our cultural disengagement from the natural world, the author argues that beginning with the introduction of written language humanity began to lose its deep and profound connection with the natural world, replacing our perception of the language of nature with a kind of animistic interaction with written words. Thought-provoking, even if tedious at times. Whatever you think of the rest of the book, be sure not to miss the final chapter (Coda), which is brilliant and beautiful. As an aside, I tried the meditative technique the author recommends in Part II of Chapter 6 and was thrilled with the results. Highly recommended.

I have long loved this book. I had occasion to recommend it again, and also have a moment to write a note about it... a rare synchronicity! So this: The few other reviews do a great job of describing the framework of relationship of the human to 'other-than-human' as exemplified in the evolution of increasingly complex abstractions of our communication systems, from pictograph to alphabet. From representation to communication by agreement that a symbol, and its related sounds mean a thing. What is passed over is the weaving of the story between the technical and the experienced. So I introduced the book thusly: It is an interesting book that weaves two stories together.. One of the experienced, "Other-Than-Human" world - of all types, from animal to insect, and charting the path of the human communication from the pictorial representation of the world as experienced, to the abstractions that make up the alphabet and the dictionary of words. Most of which have little direct association w the thing they are describing. In that movement of what might be called sophistication, he posits that our human experience has become increasingly split off from the rest of the world as our filter of engagement & experiences with the Other World(s) is increasingly via the cognitive & descriptive and less of the wordless, amazed, truly "awe-some" experience. I know I feel this lack.It is split that creates so many of the large and complex problems we are dealing with today. We tend to think we understand the systems we are sometimes rather slapdashedly mucking around with... We do not. What we do not typically reckon with is how integrated life is. And that it is more than a hallmark card, or a sappy new age chant to say that everything is connected to everything...Not knowing this is central to what we call "unintended consequences", but really are more accurately "unconscious consequences". While we have also gained some learning and benefit from our reductionist science, there is no doubt of that... if we do not heed the opening introduction of this book, and its basic prescription for our consideration : That to be human... a vital, life living , life supporting person/life force we Must have some meaningful relationship with the Other-Than-Human.For other books that work out that thesis in fact if not directly I'd suggest The Elephant Whisperer, and related books. And almost anything by Carl Safina. Especially "Song of the Blue Ocean".

Very helpful and informative. A good read of multiple short articles on different nutritional anthropology findings and research. Condition was fair

A lot of really boring articles about a fascinating subject.

It's been a good book so far, it's really an introduction to the field so don't expect any really in depth articles but the articles presented give a great idea of the state of research and where current trends stand.

Interesting collection of articles providing much food for thought.

This book is a bit strange. I was expecting it to be a 'standard' introductory textbook, thoroughly covering the basics of this field. Instead, it is a hodgepodge collection of published scientific papers and chapters from other books/sources. Some of these 'reprints' from other sources are quite interesting and worth reading. Overall, the book is just a collection of other people's work. I would buy the book again, but I would like to find a book that truly covers this fairly new topic/field from "beginning to end".

I'll use it for my class. The book was updated in this edition. It' great. I fully recomended. You will enjoy.

amazing information, very informative.I think maybe it need sto emphasize more that people are not supposed to consume meat and other animal products.

The field of nutritional anthropology and food studies has grown in scope and significance in recent years, and the interest in these topics bridges many constituencies - from academics to activists, from policy makers to "foodies." The new edition of this seminal volume will have something for everyone of these interest groups, as it represents the most comprehensive collection of articles, and reflects a truly biocultural perspective - as well as an anthropologically four field approach to the field. A few classic articles are included in this volume, including Richard Lee's account of Christmas in the Kalahari and Marvin Harris' Sacred Cow examination - but many of the articles are new to this edition and indeed reflect the burgeoning of the discipline. In the interests of transparency I confess that I have an article included in the volume, but my mere five pages is a small segment of this exhaustive volume that includes more than 500 pages, so I feel I can reflect on the remainder of the volume objectively. The editors set the stage for the volume in their introduction in which they articulate the importance of the biocultural perspective and of seeing food production, distribution, use, metabolism, and food perception and symbolism all as part of complex food systems that warrant analysis from a variety of perspectives. Throughout the volume the editors balance differing perspectives and competing paradigms. The book is divided into sections that focus on specific aspects of nutritional anthropology. One large section includes nearly a dozen articles that examine the evolution of human food patterns, the diversity of subsistence strategies, and the biological legacy we carry forward from our long distant ancestors of earlier millenia. These works present a solid examination of prehistoric foodways and the impact of milestones in food production, such as the adoption of agriculture over foraging. The solid science of these collected works provide a welcome contrast to images of "cavemen diets" that proliferate in popular media. The next long section explores the age old question of why we eat, what we eat. The articles in this section reflect ecological, adaptive, and materialist explanations of food patterns, as well as symbolic and interpretive analyses of foodways. From examination of seemingly perplexing food consumption such as insect eating (Dufour) and geophagy or eating earth (Young et al.), to unpacking the symbolism of lavishly prepared Japanese children's lunch boxes (Allison), to understanding the link between gender and nutritional deficiencies (Brenton), or the use of foods as sources of seasoning, (Etkin), pleasure (Grivetti), or markers of religious purity (Dubisch), this section provides a comprehensive model of the interdisciplinary approaches to food studies. The last, and longest section of the book examines the contemporary challenges of food access and distribution, as roughly a billion people on the planet live with inadequate access to sufficient foods, and an equal number live with a surfeit. Several articles portray a picture of what life is like when one doesn't have enough to eat, including the classic work of Adolfo Chávez and his colleagues in their longitudinal study of undernutrition in Mexico. Others examine the ways in which humans have developed strategies to ensure the nutritional adequacy of their children (Sellen, Pelto et al) to protect the most vulnerable members of every society. The impact of food abundance and the mismatch between the Paleolithic bodies we have inherited and the culture of food excess are the topic of several articles that illustrate the problems that we are confronting in dealing with this dilemma of abundance (Crooks, Brewis, Gladwell, Sapolsky, and Lieberman). Finally the book concludes with several articles that identify strategies to remedy these problems of global food inequality, and reflect the applied perspectives of contemporary anthropology. The breadth and scope of this collection is unparalleled in other volumes or edited books. The truly biocultural perspectives inherent in these works, the balance between evolutionary and applied perspectives, and the inclusion of both highly materialist analyses and inherently interpretive or symbolic analyses reflects both the diversity within the discipline of nutritional anthropology, and the editors' success at capturing this complexity within the field. As one who used the first edition of this book for many years and mourned when it went out of print, as no single alternative volume was equal to this book, I can only express my joy at this new edition that will more than adequately fulfill my needs when I teach Nutritional Anthropology again in the coming semester. The second edition is both bigger and better than its predecessor, and the editors are to be commended for so effectively capturing the complexities of our discipline and using an even hand in representing diverse perspectives.

The minute I first heard about this book I was intrigued. I'm not sure why I have a fascination with historical mysteries, maybe it ties back to my first reading of Sherlock Holmes, in any case I knew I wanted to read this series. The addition of the supernatural added a touch of creepiness to the already strong air of mystery that the story holds. Abigail makes for a great narrator with her ability to observe the 'ordinary' as Jackaby says. She gives the reader a look at her new employer that makes Jackaby as much of a mystery as the murder they are trying to solve. His unusual ability to see the supernatural allows him to notice things that nobody else does, but at the same time he misses the ordinary, which makes Abigail such a great assistant for him. Add in Jenny Cavanaugh, the ghost who inhabits Jackaby's current residence and her mysterious death and the frog that stinks up the whole house, and throw in a former assistant turned duck and you've got a thoroughly entertaining story that really doesn't read like anything else. It does have a taste of Sherlock Holmes to it combined with Stroud's Lockwood & Co. focus on ghosts and ghouls. There is a tiny bit of bad language and a moderate amount of violence (someone was brutally murdered after all, several someone's actually). I found Jackaby a fascinating case study in the art of the historical fantasy mystery (is there such a genre? If not there should be).

What can I tell you about 294 pages of jumbled up writing. The story was predictably unoriginal. His jacket is a sonic screwdriver and personality of a young Sherlock. He has had companions like the Doctor Who want adventure. He sees things no one's else sees. The book was creative but a mess. He had ideas but nowhere to put them. Nothing supernatural until the last 5 chapters.I read two to three books a week. 300-600 pages. This was a struggle to finish. If you enjoy a light fast read, be my guest. Just do not expect anything great. I gave two stars for the description of the home.

I wasn’t totally sure what JACKABY was all about but I was excited to start it! I actually hadn’t known that it involved paranormal elements so that was an interesting surprise when I started reading! (Yes, yes, I know that’s what the whole series is about and it’s plain as day in the book descriptions but you know me and going in totally blind.) I actually thought JACKABY was straight historical fiction, like a YA Sherlock Holmes. I was also interested to find out that Jackaby himself wasn’t a young adult, and I thought that was great to have an adult character as a main part of the book since so many YA books skip around older figures and stick with the teens. It brought an interesting dynamic and mix and also allowed Abigail to get involved in so many things that she may not normally have had access to. That’s always my thing with YA mysteries — a big question that always has to be addressed is why a teen wouldn’t go to an adult with a murder-mystery case and in JACKABY, Abigail is working for paranormal detective R.F. Jackaby.I also figured that there would be a romance between Jackaby (this was before I knew how much older he was) and Abigail and I’m really glad that there wasn’t! It was nice to see the romance built with Abigail and more of a secondary character and that it was a side plot and not a main focus of the book. The quirky mysteries still took the spotlight and there wasn’t any mixing of work and romance. I actually didn’t really care for the romance, though. I thought it wasn’t very developed in the first book, which it didn’t have to be developed right away, but for some reason it felt fast and forced for me.JACKABY wasn’t a perfect book but it was really enjoyable! Things kind of piled on with the paranormal but it was fun and not overwhelming as some books tend to feel when dealing with so many different para-creatures.

The positive:The story itself is interesting, the idea of combining Sherlock Holmes and supernatural also. Jackaby is different from Sherlock, which is good (he may have Dr Who's attributes, but I've never seen an episode, so I can't tell). The length and pace appropriate.I liked the budding love story (which is not between the main protagonists, refreshingly). The most lovely cover I've seen in a long time. This alone deserves five stars. The negative:The story's setting should be in 1890s but, apart from a few clothes' description, it feels like nowadays (language, conduct, relationship portrayal). It could be set in today's parallel world without much loss. No need to stick to Sherlock Holmes so much. Then there is Jackaby's character - sometimes distracted and eccentric (which I liked), and sometimes lucid about 'earthly' affairs, other's feelings, etc. Not consistent, but I've high hopes for the sequel.I also guessed the murderer right away (this didn't take away from the story for me, but is considered a negative characteristic in general). The neutral:This story is appropriate for adult and YA readers. It's not because of the inappropriate language or sth, more because of the story's themes and protagonists' behavior that IMO is not interesting to youngsters). All in all, not a bad read - I will read the next book in a series too, to see if it's improved.
