Amazing story about a handful of Titanic passengers and the disaster that followed. Very well written book which made you almost believe you were among these unfortunate people. A nice summary of the "after life" the ones that survived experienced, and how they too eventually departed. Unfortunately, lots of mistakes were made leading up to that night when Titanic hit that iceberg. Glad to read that many maritime changes were made as a result of this disaster. This book and the movie "A night to remember" and "Titanic", seem to keep reminding one that life can be short, and unexpected regardless of personal status, or wealth. The whole Titanic incident is a haunting reality of life's thin threat, and how that can sever at any given moment. Sad also is the number of people that died, due to outdated laws and mistakes. One can't take any of that for granted when one boards a vessel even today. Not recommended for reading before taking a trip on a ship across the seas. It will have you counting the life boats on board as a minimum.

When I was 12 years old, I met with then-85-year-old Edwina Celia (Troutt) McKenzie who had survived the sinking of the Titanic. She told me the tale not only of the famous night to remember but also of a different time in history when society was obsessively class conscious and opulence was revered. As a middle class 60's kid from California, this period was difficult for me to imagine. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I saw this book title and bought it on a whim. I thought that it looked kind of boring, but I was very favorably surprised. Most of all I enjoyed the descriptions of various high society people's lives at the turn of the century and seeing the irony of how, for some of them, all they cherished & obsessed about in life was quickly rendered moot by the chance presence of an iceberg along the course of the most magnificent ship in the world.

This book was pretty interesting, I liked getting to know the passengers better. I especially liked the pictures of various places on the ship. Wow, the layers of richness in the designs almost hurt the eye, they really were into "a lot more is better" back then. Seeing the likenesses of a lot of the privileged made the reality more human. I really think that most of the people thought they were going to be saved, or there would have been a lot more fighting for the lifeboats. Nobody pays much attention to the fact that 2/3 of the steerage class perished, and that the gates were locked to keep them below! I am from Denver, and I was heartened that Molly (Margaret) Brown worked hard to help the poor survivors after being rescued. This was a well researched and interesting book!

There have been several books written on the sinking of the Titanic and this one concentrated on the lives of the first-class passengers which some reviewers didn't like. However, I found the book to contain snippets on other class passengers as well. The book begins with an introduction to the individuals that will be featured later on. I found it interesting to read how the passengers dressed for their evening meal, what they ate, and what they did to amuse themselves. Also of interest is the amount of luggage they carried on board and the amount of precious jewelry. The book goes into considerable detail regarding protocol regarding who benefits from being lowered from the stricken vessel and the survival of those in the water. Thankfully the Carpathia came along to the rescue and it was encouraging how those on board catered to the Titanic survivors to make them comfortable.J. Bruce Ismay is often criticized for ignoring the warning of icebergs up ahead and instead of slowing down he ordered the vessel to increase its speed. Other what ifs such as the Californian ship that ignored the distress signals of the Titanic gets one to speculate how many others could have been saved since it was much closer to the Titanic than was the Carpathia. The book concludes as to what became of several of the survivors in their future lives. Some lived only a short time thereafter while others reached the age beyond one hundred or into their nineties. If you would like to learn more about this epic tragedy this book should be of interest to you.

2.75 stars“Men who are fun to go shopping with are rarely the marrying kind.” —THIS is insulting. Trying to pass this information off as scientific fact in order to out someone is shameful. The author also used this subject’s bond to his mother as proof of his homosexuality. The author’s zeal to recreate is a study in clunkiness. —These two might have shared a table at breakfast. Both had eighth cousins who owned ice cream parlors, which would have given them something to talk about.—He likewise has no qualms interpreting the comments of a dead man: “This richly ponderous writing style, along with Gracie’s habit of pushing his Chickamauga book on other passengers, has caused him to be characterized as the club bore amid the clublike décor of the Titanic’s smoking room. Kindly old Isidor Straus, a co-owner of Macy’s department store in New York, had accepted a copy of Gracie’s book and then returned it a few days later expressing “intense interest” in having read it. Since even the most dedicated of Civil War buffs find Gracie’s detailed descriptions of troop movements at Chickamauga to be daunting, Straus was undoubtedly merely being polite.” Sir, you don’t know that, and if you don’t know that, don’t present it as fact. While the book does improve in the second half, these errors hobble the book’s impact. This sloppy logic belongs in an undergrad’s rough draft and not as a published author’s final copy.
