Even if insightful into his personality, though, it's not entirely honest about some of the stranger incidents in his life. Cagney just refuses to say anything bad about anybody, so you'll never know by reading this that his mother hated his wife, that his two kids were constant disappointments, and that they were raised in a house separate from where he and his wife lived. He does have much to say, good and bad, about the Warner Brothers. He talks in great detail about the problems he had with them and about the studios ruling with an iron fist. Cagney's solution - he'd just walk out any time the Warners got unreasonable with him, and it's a strategy that paid off for him, because he'd always return under better terms. He talks a great deal about "The Irish Mafia" collectively and individually, and you can see that Cagney was truly an ecologist and lover of nature at heart. He says he left acting in 1961 because he just didn't care anymore and couldn't see carrying on under those circumstances - he thought his public deserved better. He was tempted to come back once, he said, in 1964 in "My Fair Lady", but ultimately decided against it. Deep down inside once he had enough money to do so, he really just wanted to work on his farm for the rest of his life, and that's what he did. He was not your typical Hollywood fellow.Cagney does mention two people anonymously as people he did not like or respect. One would have been the queen of Warner's lot in 1931 - Cagney tells his life story chronologically so you can tell pretty much when events happen. He basically said she was beautiful and was well off financially through investments but could not act. Since this was before Ruth Chatterton's time at WB, I wonder who she could have been? A hint - if Cagney really liked an actor or actress in the cast of a film he was doing, he'd mention them. If he did not, he'd say nothing. Thats's how I guessed who this actress was. Other than that, I'm not saying anything. The other person he talks about negatively - but anonymously - has got to be Mervyn LeRoy since he describes a director who would get great scripts, great players, and then pump up his part to the head office so he would be sure that he got the credit for the outcome. He describes this director right after he talks about "Mister Roberts", and since LeRoy was the director of that film that is what gave it away.I'd buy this for an insight into Cagney's outlook on life rather than an accurate blow by blow description of every event in his life negative and positive. He certainly was, as Pat O'Brien often called him, "a far away fellow".

If you're not a classic movie lover this book isn't for you. Mr. Cagney brushes lightly over the subjects of his family life and private life. I found it fascinating read in that he tells anecdotes about various movies he's made over the years. While reading this book a liberal use of Wikipedia is required; Mr. Cagney writes about individuals and movies long before my generation. So on those conditions this is an enjoyable book. What is most striking is his point of view regarding his personal acting career. To Mr. Cagney, acting was a means by which "to put food on the table." He enjoyed the basically simple life, free from the Hollywood glitz and glamor. He seems like a very personable fellow and a friend who could be counted on. He didn't enjoy the limelight although he didn't shun it either.

This is a great autobiography. It reads as though Cagney is talking to the reader-actually that is exactly what he was doing when he wrote this. It just sounds like him. Although he talks about almost all the movies he made, he doesn't go into a lot of detail. I would have liked it better if he had. But he talks about the people who influenced him and the stars and directors with whom he worked. He loved Frank McHugh, a truly gifted character actor. He also talks about his politics and his wonderful family. If you like Cagney, you will like this book. It is an easy read that makes you feel as though you would have liked this man, if you had been lucky enough to know him.

Right from the horse's mouth! Told in Cagney's rat-a-tat-tat style of speech. Even on paper I could hear his voice in my head as I read. Okay, okay, he starts the book off rambling about his childhood exploits. Sounded like a man anxiously reminiscing about the years that made him who he has become. He does so in a hurry, thus leading the reader into a tailspin. But, he does settle down after awhile.Once he hits the point in the book where his entertainment years begin, boy oh boy, hold your hat for an exciting ride. What great stuff. Even better to me as an amateur actor and movie fanatic is the behind the scenes stories Cagney shares from his first person point of view. We're talking early Hollywood stuff, like the fact Clarke Gable, Cagney and many others thought movie making would be a fad. WOW! They all predicted the big Hollywood bust similar to what happened to the Dot Com era in its infancy.Better yet are his many stories, some hilarious while others profound about his take on actors and directors of his day. Cagney pulls no punches when offering his opinions about the people and the movie business during his active years and his take on what he calls movie slop being dished out starting in the 70's. Grumpy old man syndrome? Perhaps, but it's stimulating just the same. Finally, in his later years the rough and tough Cagney turns philosopher. His love of nature and art and life are inspiring to say the least. Even though I just finished reading my copy yesterday I think I'll read it again starting right now.Awesome and Entertaining!

This memoir by Cagney proved to be droll and disappointing. Better editing and more focus on his acting career would have been more interesting. The personal anecdotes are tedious at times, and overall it's not what I expected. Mr. Cagney was a terrific performer. He would have done better to let someone else be his biographer.
