If one likes this style of painting, it is inspirational and provides plenty of opportunity to view the authors approach and read her ruminations about the scenes she has done. My only disappointment is that she limits the discussion and display of other artists to a small preface prior to chapter one - I would have enjoyed the examination of the works of other artists to be broader and deeper. That said, I'm not unhappy with purcase and enjoy what is presented.

Very good book. Really get the idea that Ms. Mowrey enjoys being out in the landscape the way others enjoy going to church. The opportunity to commune with nature is very important spiritually. Given that, landscape painting is a testament to what we see. Not so much a painting tutorial as a means of appreciating the landscapes we paint. Would highly recommend.

A very interesting book.Author takes us through her ways of doing pastel, and some oil work, but with the thought process involved instead of methods of doing the work. A second reading is important to get the ideas she presents. The first reading makes it easy to just scan the pictures.and miss the important thoughts. I would love to take a class from her if it were available.

Inspirational and spectacularly beautiful book on achieving effects of light and color in landscape painting. I read this cover to cover for the useful information but will continue to pore through the pages for the illustrations. Mowry's paintings are romantic and ethereal, and book is inspiring for those who wish to incorporate color, light, and mood into their paintings. A must have for your library.

Landscape MeditationsLandscape meditations is by far one of the best books I have ever read on being an Artist! In my, almost 70, years as an artist I have struggled with my eccentricities. For years I have been looking at a dead tree in a field off a busy hi-way. Elizabeth Mowry has given me "permission" to do what I should have done long ago, pull of the road and get some pix of it!!! In my case just a bit to late. The tree had finally fallen over so all I have is memories, but thats O.K. too, Now I have two, starting a third painting of that tree that I have pulled out of my mind. She has helped me realize that I am an "CRAZY" artist and that's just what I am supposed to be. Move out of the way world cause here I come. I am a MUCH better artist because of this book. It is beyond must have, it is essential!

This is a lovely book from an experienced pastelist. The photos of her work are gorgeous and she kindly shares with the reader her process in creating art. Please note, though, that this is not a step-by-step instructional book. For the latter please see some of her other books.

Elizabeth Mowry has put together a good book on pastels and the range they offer. We think of pastels as soft colors, and they can be, but Mowry shows the more intense rich side of pastels in Landscape Meditations. Very good book, my first in pastels, I acrylic paint and draw, but I do believe pastels may be in a future piece.

Love this book. It contains a wide variety of artists work. Some old masters, some modern. All excellent. I've used this as a reference book which has the ability to utterly destroy "artists block" and will afford the reader enough inspiration that he may create a masterpiece of his own.

E.E. Knight's ninth entry in the Vampire Earth series, March In Country, is a pleasant surprise after the last few clunkers but still fails to advance the story in any real fashion. While a major Kurian in Atlanta has designs on taking over wartorn Kentucky, Major Valentine has his own plans to repopulate the area with Golden Ones. Will Valentine be able to locate and move grogs from a faraway enclave while just about every faction is allied against him? While the story and prose kept my interest, the plot for these books just barely continues to plod along. The usual cast of secondary characters are involved (Duvalier, Ahn-Kha, Lambert) but none of them are fleshed out. Blake is seen briefly. A 4th type of hunter is mentioned and is almost immediately discarded. Ahn-Kha and Valentine swear vengeance against General Martinez but this will probably not happen until somewhere around book no. 22. I admit that I love end of the world tales and Vampire Earth is a doozy. Aliens and their giant nigh-unstoppable soldiers who literally suck the life out of you? Heck yeah? The earth is destroyed through natural disasters, disease and famine and the human population has been reduced to virtual slavery? Tell me more! From the high of the first few books, this series has been something of a letdown. By the ninth book, our hero, Valentine, is already an old man at 30, who loves killing, is an absentee father to his half-alien "son", Blake, but is someone who will risk everything for the sake of his companions and of the innocent. Is this it for humanity? Besides a relatively small area of the central southern U.S. most of humanity is allied with their alien overlords. And even Southern Command is in a defensive posture. Valentine and his crew are virtually cutoff from any meaningful support. And while virtually every book features the death of a Kurian or two, there doesn't seem to be a shortage of more aliens to fill in the gap. At this rate, E.E. Knight could write fifty books and still not a lot would happen. I like this series; I always have. But I definitely am not looking forward to reading the next edition anywhere near as much as I used to.

How long are we going to keep going without getting anywhere? There has been no closure in the past three books of this series. I have loved this series since the beginning so I still gave this a 4 star but for someone that does not have time and money invested in this series and author wait until the cheaper priced edition comes out for Kindle.I thought that since we have spent the last two books on the same story line that we would see some movement in the series. There are still TONS of un-resolved story lines in this book. Did finally see about a new hunter group but not fleshed out much at all. I am really still waiting for a real Bear moment from Valentine. He has had a few but I would really like to see him finally cut loose and see what would happen. The story line IMHO is setting up for another betrayal with Martinez in charge of Southern Command. The story line needs to get something done with this, in previous books, Valentine did not leave anyone behind him that he had a personal grudge with, now it seems that the author is simply seeing how many enemies he can line up at one time, Martinez, Seattle Kurian, etc... Want to see some more movement in the story line. There is some in this book but we really need to see Valentine in the trenches again not in a strategic position....

I really enjoy this series and enjoyed this book for the most part. Although the editing was rough. Thoughts didn't seem to wrap up, paragraphs jumped from one point to the next with no transition and sometimes I was left wondering if a page was missing. I reread parts thinking I must have skipped some lines or missed some major points and often wondered what the heck was going on. Because necessary descriptive details were lacking and lead ins and transitions were absent it made this book hard to follow.That said, I still very much enjoyed this book, but I do hope EE Knight and his editor can do a better job on the next edition.added 5/21/15 - I have been rereading this series and was again really annoyed with this book in the series. There were parts of the story that just left you hanging or did not really fill in the story and left you questioning what happened. SPOILER ALERT - at one point valentine is said to be recovering from injury and even after rereading that section three times I still do not see how he got injured. He - jumped aside, just barely missing the bullet - but that was as close to being injured as I could get. Another part that had so much potential but just fizzed out with no details was about Frat being able to make people think they know him or think he is someone he is not? what? And again with the Raven and dying Narcisa with the budded life weaker. That was a huge occurrence for such a small about of details.really disappointed.

Acton in this story of the Vampire Earth series seemed to be missing for most of it. I like t the dystopian future that Knight has created and I think the character development is good, BUT where there earlier ones in the series had this ability to really grab you (much like a reaper getting it's first victim of the night) these more recent ones (maybe since Winter Duty) the intensity has dropped off and was replaced by connections between people seems to be the more focus off the writing. If you want to keep up with the story line I think this will suit a reader just fine, but if you are looking for the same intensity as earlier you marry not find it in this one. This does has a really good build up that could maybe be capitalized on in the next in the series, so will have to wait and see if the next one gets back to earlier formula that got me hooked in the first place.

This is not a tour guide nor is it a story of what to see in Bangkok if you go. But if you do go you will want to read it and maybe even have it with you. It is a deep dive into the world of the expat in Bangkok and how the city is seen from that perspective. But, the author does love the city and he shows his understanding through the comments he makes about the average Thai people encountered in his sojourn there. A very striking book.

Took up this book after reading his fascinating tale of the gambling scene in Macao.Can't think of any other author writing about south east Asia in such detail and with such authenticity. There is a weak point to Bangkok Days in that it just sort of peters out at the end. If something was resolved I missed itAnother aspect is it is a singular tutorial on Asian religious beliefs

This book is not so much about Bangkok as it is about how to survive soul-crushing loneliness. But the writing is superb.

The author's language is rich and imaginative. This is a rather disjointed collection of travel diaries which was a pleasure to delve into. There were at least a few insights worth highlighting for my future references.

Depressing

I visited Bangkok for the first time only weeks before reading this book, and really enjoyed following the adventures of Lawrence Osbourne in a small underworld community of foreign transplants to Bangkok. It's a travelogue, and nothing too momentous happens, but the sights, sounds, impressions, are beautifully narrated. I particularly enjoyed the naked honesty and self-irony Osbourne employs in describing some truly awkward moments. I laughed out loud many times, but also felt sad, engaged, and provoked at different times throughout this thoughtful story.

Through a weave of various stories, I received information about Bangkok and its interconnected streets and "citizens." I'm not sure if I liked the writing or the information I gathered since I am heading to Thailand.

Mildly amusing in some spots, but lacks the “punch” that I remember from classic Mad magazines of my youth.

Not worth it

Funny and clever the whole way through. No opponent of this regime should miss this book. MAD Magazine is tougher on Trump than the Democrats--and funnier. Not just about Trump, it also rips Rosie O'Donnell, Pope Francis, and some other celebrities. Well worth the price.

I guess one of the perks of winning a presidential election is that you get to be skewered by humor magazines like MAD. In this volume they give Trump the expected going over. There are enough Clinton shots that it's quite clear they could have turned their guns on Hillary had the election turned out differently.This book follows the tried and true MAD method. A lot of one page poster bits, (repositioning popular movies and such as Trump features). Lots of one page joke ideas, (for example, Trump quotes opposite quotes from the Bible). There aren't too many long form cartoons or parodies, which was fine by me because sometimes they can be pretty labored, (for example, a Zombie Apprentice line up featuring dead celebrities went on way too long). Peppered throughout are one page checklists of Trump v. Clinton, or Trump v. The Pope, and so on, comparing their stats like two opposing boxers. They were especially clever. Lots of rewritten songs, (Christmas carols and the like), that had some witty rhymes and jokes. There's a great deal of photoshopping, which of course is new to people who grew up on 60's and 70's MAD. For example, I got a kick out of how all of the Republican contenders were dressed and posed for a fake J. Crew catalogue.It's hard to keep this sort of thing up for an entire book, (hair jokes, Trump University jokes, and so on), but they do their best with the material at hand. There aren't any deep cuts or penetrating takedowns. This is Jay Leno/Jimmy Fallon territory and the humor is PG-13. But that said, there were a few chuckles and grins, and some of the individual bits were very clever.All in all this was exactly what I would expect from a MAD style book, and I'd suggest that how you feel about MAD and its approach to topical humor will probably dictate, (along with your degree of loyalty or opposition to Trump), how much you enjoy this book.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. I grew up with MAD magazine; it fits my sense of humor well.I was thinking of purchasing the latest "serious" top-selling books about the current President, but since things are going from bad to worse in this administration, I wanted to lighten up my perspective. Ah, this just fit the bill !

MAD About Trump is quite funny if you're not a Trump follower. They should have gone deeper into some specific criticisms, such as Trump's legal problems, his attack on the environment, and so on, but there are several pieces in here that are especially witty. I plan to hang the fake diploma from the fake Trump University on my wall. Maybe one fourth of the book I found rather lame. But overall it was funny and I'm glad I bought it.

A few good hits but mostly just like a copy of Mad Magazine at a much bigger price.

We got the book to read, and made it most of the way through before our mastiff ate it. Up to that point, we enjoyed it. After that point, the dog did, too.

My wish is that this book is read by people who can't see that there is a human being behind each displaced person. That there is a story behind every life. That we all want the same thing, a life worth living.

We Are Displaced tells the story of Malala and her family becoming internally displaced and then living in England after she was shot as well as the stories of several other women and girls who have been displaced as well. The stories are told in their own words with their own emotions. Some are still living in refugee camps, some are working hard to make a new life in a new country. One didn’t even learn why her parents fled when she was young and one “adopted” a refugee family when they arrived in America. These are all important stories to know. As I read the book, I found myself reading bits and pieces to anyone who would listen. I very highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

My 8 yr-old daughter and I learned a lot from listening to these inspiring survival stories from women from around the globe. It is hard to imagine loosing everything including loved ones. How these girls managed to overcome their losses and ordeals are life lessons that no one should ever experience. Very relevant in the unstable world we currently live in to raise awareness on the lives of the refugees we might have around us and on our own vulnerabilities.

What a marvelous and heartbreaking story about displaced families and refugees all over the world. We need to take note about not only the hatred they experienced in their own countries, but also the racism and hatred they continue to experience in their new lands.

The best book that I have ever read

THIS IS a very informative book. This young woman has endured so much. The story of her life evokes emotion of empathy and gratitude to live in a country, although not perfect, but where girls may attend school. This is a must read for any one who wants to know what it is like to be a young refugee. So many of us take our freedoms for granted and have no idea why families flee the countries of their birth.

The stories Malala shares are tragic and amazing at the same time. I highly recommend this book.

Powerful stories from displaced girls from around the world. A must read for those of us who care about humanity.

As someone who grew up in the ‘80s I found this book to be a wonderful time capsule that took me back. Faulkner was able to bring to life a time that seems both incredibly familiar and yet also incredibly dated (the world really has changed a lot in the last three plus decades!).What is most impressive is Faulkner’s ability not only put into words the feeling of being a kid, but to do so through memories and experiences recalled that do not feel forced or adulterated (despite Faulkner’s own caution that memories from early childhood should not be treated as perfectly factual). Throughout the story, Faulkner describes himself as impressionable - particularly through the influence of his older brother - and this may be the key to his success in a vivid recollection of his early youth. Tragically, the often difficult events that unfolded during these early years may also have played a role in the deep imprint they left on him.I read this book as an adult but actually think it is well suited to mature younger readers (possibly 6-8th grade). I think they would find comfort in the struggle and confusion that accompanies every young person while being able to relate to the levity and innocence that they may have experienced only a few years before. Hopefully the experiences of young readers of this book aren’t as difficult as the author’s were. But I believe there is great value in understanding that every person has a hidden story and it’s possible to rise above it and accomplish great things.Faulkner chose to write this as a memoir and not a novel as he had originally conceived. This was definitely the right choice as it clearly added a layer of clarity and honesty to the story. The end result is a page-turning window into one boy and one story of early childhood in America.

Very heartfelt look at abuse from the viewpoint of a child's innocent mind

Great book on child abuse from an abused Childs eyes and very well written!

This book was a story that captures the heart and mind of the reader. It resonates with such a vivid and unique memory of childhood. You are transported to the innocent days of 3 channels on television, and hour after hour filled with adventures and trials that could only come from the beautiful mind and spirit of a child. It was incredible to share the feeling and essence of such a carefree and joyous beginning in the life of David, and to then be witness to the horror of events that would normally give you the impression of Hollywood exaggeration. The difference was that this time there was no movie set or soundstage for David to escape from. In the case of our young protagonist, the speed in which the innocence and joy of life was corrupted by dark forces beyond his control is dizzying. It is a story that many people of our world can relate to, and hopefully this will be a story that will give people pause to reflect and maybe be inspired. Many people have come from a challenging or sometimes horrifying past, and through all their trials, they still end up as caring, loving, beautiful people. The story of David and his belief in superheroes has that same ending. It is a message to anyone that has had a similar past that it is possible to overcome terrible situations and thrive. This is a beautiful story of love, redemption, and forgiveness that is going to touch people deeply.

What a well written book. David writes from the heart. It is a triumph for the author to be able to write his memoir as seen through his eyes as a child. I loved reading about all his escapades as a youngster. Many times I chuckled out loud! One senses his confusion as his life changes from a very normal, loving home to one of upheaval, violence and uncertainty. David does not write to produce a dramatic response, but rather to tell his story, through the eyes and innocence of a child.

This book grabbed hold of me and didn’t let go. The author chose his words beautifully in telling his story as an adult but from a child’s perspective. And although you know from the start that bad things are going to happen, he takes his time in getting there. That gives the reader the chance to “grow up” a little with him first. I could watch the happy family dynamics and enjoy his childhood antics – then feel the paradigm shift from benign to confusing to dangerous. As things got out of control, I realized how thoroughly helpless he was because of his age. A well-written account of a terrible time.
