...because this is a bit of a fireside chat. It's not terrible and there are certainly nuggets of wisdom, but words that don't come to mind are "pedagogically thought out," "systematic," "succinct," and "eye-opening." I think the other works that are more fundamental, though if you'd like to hear reflections on a long, successful career, this is the book for you.

Mr. McAsh's book cover not only the long-established methodology of fight staging but also demonstrates some of the recently rediscovered research on authentic techniques. Definitely ahead of the curve.

This is a good overview for basic fight tactics and exercises. Good for beginners or anyone looking for a refresher.

Excellent!!! I got so much out of this. A personal hero of mine since "Highlander". There is also an instructional video he did if you can get your hands on it, well worth it.

Review

Acclaim for Philippe Sands’ EAST WEST STREET   “An indispensable book.” —Jack Fischel, Hadassah Magazine   “Remarkable sleuthing.” —Christopher R. Browning, The New York Review   “An intimate and important tale . . . vivid . . . engaging . . . A kind of mystery-solving journey . . . remarkable.” —John Tirman, The Washington Post   “A tour de force . . . penetrating . . . A pillar of the emerging genre of third-generation investigation into the legacy of the European Jewish apocalypse . . . This is a history that is both personal and universal . . . Equal parts legal scholarship, memoir and multitude of mysteries, told with admirable suspense and elocution . . . Here we find both the detail of concepts and the detail of personal lives and geographies . . . Sands acts as archivist and archaeologist, traveler and historian—but also as horrified observer.” —Sarah Wildman, Jewish Daily Forward   “A monumental and profoundly important book . . . A brilliant account that reads as part history, part human rights theory, and part thriller . . . Sands writes like a skilled archeologist digging into the bloodied soil of Europe . . . A riveting melding of memoir and history . . . A powerful book, exquisitely written and profound in its implications and importance . . . A singular accomplishment . . . An inspirational book that readers will cherish for years to come.” —Michael N. Dobkowski, Jewish Book Council   “Dazzling, shattering. East West Street is one of the most extraordinary books that I have ever read.” —Antonia Fraser   “A masterpiece that is part detective story and part exploration of family history, memory, crime, guild, loss and law . . . Exceptionally gripping and moving . . . East West Street is described by John Le Carré as ‘a monumental achievement’ and he is right. It is work of the highest order and it deserves to be as widely read as possible. It is, I reiterate, a masterpiece.” —Iain Martin, Reaction   “Supremely gripping . . . Sands has produced something extraordinary . . . Sands tells it not just as history but as a family memoir, a detective thriller and a meditation on the power of memory . . . Written with novelistic skill, its prose effortlessly poised, its tone perfectly judged, the book teems with life and high drama . . . One of the most gripping and powerful books imaginable.” —Dominic Sandbrook, The Sunday Times   “Remarkable . . . a voyage of discovery . . . a riveting odyssey . . . Sands elicits the most extraordinary revelations from his subjects.” —Isabel Hull, London Review of Books   “Magnificent and compelling . . . Sands has created a masterpiece . . . It should be read by everyone.” —Marc Mangel, Distinguished Research Professor of Mathematical Biology at University of California, Santa Cruz   “A rare and unusual event: a book about international law that makes you want to keep reading.” —Cullen Murphy, Vanity Fair   “Outstanding . . . Consistently intriguing . . . A fusion of personal and professional interest, with Sands delving into his family’s cordoned-off past to unearth concealed truths and trace the circumstances that led to the birth of his chosen field of humanitarian law . . . Powerful and poignant, but also original . . . Ultimately, Sands’s multifaceted book stands triumphantly alone. It even-handedly charts four separate lives and skillfully explores a beleaguered city with blurred borders . . . It amplifies the roar of history, dramatizes the depravity of, and the moral struggle against, what Primo Levi called the “infernal order” that is Nazism . . . It is a fact-finding mission, a gripping courtroom drama, a tale, ultimately and cathartically, of good triumphing over evil. In Sands’s pages, many beautifully adorned with photos, maps, letters—evidence—we see the piece-by-piece reconstruction of a lost world, and the development of ideas that would help safeguard a new one.” —Malcolm Forbes, New Republic   “East West Street is the fascinating story of a distinguished jurist who tries to untangle the secret wartime history of his family, as he masterfully brings to life the riveting legal drama that forced the men who ordered genocide to face justice. His suspenseful investigative memoir breaks new ground on World War II, as he takes readers on a journey across Europe that is rendered in lush and vivid prose.” —Anne-Marie O'Connor, author of The Lady in Gold   “Sands is a fine writer and sets his scenes so compellingly and earnestly that his enterprise succeeds . . . Engrossing, luminous and moving.” —Samuel Moyn, The Wall Street Journal   “A compelling family memoir intersects with the story of the Jewish legal minds who sowed the seeds for human rights law at the Nuremberg trials . . . important and engrossing . . . The surprise is that even when charting the complexities of law, Sands’s writing has the intrigue, verve and material density of a first-rate thriller . . . He can magic whole histories of wartime heroism out of addresses eight decades old. Or, chasing the lead of a faded photograph, he can unearth possible alternate grandparents and illicit liaisons to be verified only by DNA tests . . . Exceptional.” —Lisa Appignanesi, The Guardian   “Sands proceeds in the manner of certain historians . . . he also works in the manner of the author of thrillers . . . In Sands’s history, as in all great novels, we encounter characters who, though seemingly secondary, are essential to the plot . . . And all the while Sands works in the way of artists like Filippo Lippi, who painted himself into the corner of his ‘Coronation of the Virgin’ and ‘The Funeral of Saint Stephen’ . . . The result is a narrative, to my knowledge unprecedented . . . We have in Sands’s East West Street a machine of power and beauty that should not be ignored by anyone in the United States or elsewhere who would believe that there are irreparable crimes whose adjudication should not stop at the border . . . Barack Obama and his successors would be well advised to move to the top of their reading lists this account of the birth, amid the darkest conceivable shadows, of an unprecedented body of rights-based law, whose application has scarcely begun.” —Bernard-Henri Lévy, New York Times Book Review (cover review)   “Vivid and readable . . . East West Street weaves lives together in a kind of collective biography of a generation . . . remarkable . . . compelling . . . moving and powerful.” —Mark Mazower, Financial Times   “A story of heroes and loss . . . An outstanding book; a moving history [that] at times, reads like a detective story . . . Sands’s greatest achievement is the way he moves between his family story and the lives of Lauterpacht and Lemkin and how he brings their complex work to life . . . This is the best kind of intellectual history . . . a clear, astonishing story.” —David Herman, New Statesman   “Gripping, profound and deeply personal . . . Excellent.” —Mark Harrison, Holocaust Memorial Day Trust   “Remarkable . . . vivid . . . complex and gripping . . . East West Street is a fascinating and revealing book, for the things it explains: the origins of laws that changed our world, no less. Thoughtful, and compassionate, and important.” —Daniel Hahn, The Spectator   “Moving and deep . . . an astonishing work in many ways: on the personal level, on the level of coincidence, on the epic level involving most people on earth, and on the philosophical and legal level. That Sands managed to pull it off and pull it all together is remarkable. Lemkin and Lauterpacht are drawn with an artist's eye and are indelible—Lauterpacht's reserve juxtaposed against Lemkin's nervousness . . . The issue of the prosecution of genocide versus crimes against humanity is fascinating and was made clear to me for the first time . . . Bravo! . . . A gargantuan achievement.” —Jane Alexander   “This remarkable book is partly a lawyer's quest to understand the roots of international law (one that is surprisingly fascinating for the non-legal reader) and a riveting family memoir . . . Extraordinary . . . astonishing . . . a considerable feat . . . profoundly moving.” —Caroline Sanderson, The Bookseller (Book of the Month)   “A book like no other I have ever read—unputdownable and unforgettable.” —Orlando Figes   “Beautiful and necessary.” —A.L. Kennedy   “Astonishing and important.” —Louis Begley   “East West Street is a strange and beautiful object: at once a genealogy of international human rights law, and a delicate family portrait . . . Meticulous, moving, compulsive.” —Adam Thirlwell   “This book transcends genre, breaking convention to create something fascinating and engrossing. Sands manages to weave the most personal of stories through the most globally impactful: the inclusion of the term ‘crimes against humanity’ in the judgement at Nuremberg.” —Steven Cooper of Waterstones, The Bookseller   “Engrossing . . . remarkable . . . part family memoir, part biographical essay, part historical exploration . . . A reminder of the incredible riches that are to be found in archives, parish records, attics and old suitcases when there is the energy and persistence to keep digging.” —Caroline Moorehead, Literary Review   “In East West Street, Philippe Sands brings all the power of his formidable intellect, his inquisitive spirit and his emotional imagination to bear on a complicated tangle of personal, legal and European history. In a gripping narrative that is tender yet dispassionate, intensely felt and meticulously researched, Sands uncovers the surprising affinities and divergences among the parallel lives of three men, two celebrated, one unknown, whose struggles, sorrows, accomplishments and defeats, large and small, help us to understand and, more, to feel the mittel-European civilization their lives embodied, a whole world that was destroyed and reinvented within the span of a single lifetime.” —Michael Chabon, author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay   “Gripping . . . Sands’s study achieves a balance between the individual and the political that brings the events of the Holocaust into new focus . . . Readers interested in history, political science, and/or religion shouldn’t miss this compelling work with unforgettable characters.” —Margaret Heller, Library Journal   “In a triumph of astonishing research, Sands has brilliantly woven together several family stories which lead to the great denouement at the Nuremberg tribunal. No novel could possibly match such an important work of truth.” —Antony Beevor (English Military Historian)   “An engrossing tale of family secrets and groundbreaking legal precedents . . . a tense, riveting melding of memoir and history . . . From letters, photographs, and deeply revealing interviews, the author portrays Nazi persecutions in shattering detail . . . Vastly important.” —Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)   “A monumental achievement … a profoundly personal account of the origins of crimes against humanity and genocide, told with love, anger and precision.” —John le Carré

In East West Street, the reader actually gets treated to three stories. One is the family story of Phillipe Sands who has relatives who survived the Holocaust, thus explaining why he wrote this book and the two men who developed the terms “genocide” and “crimes against humanity” East West Street is like reading a detective story of sorts because one is not exactly sure how the pieces of the three men fit together at points, but by the end they do fit. Having the patience to wait it out may be the hard part. The choppy vignette nature of some of the sections could make it difficult for certain readers to get truly invested in the story because the minute one gets engaged with one story, the story switches to another character and the process repeats itself. I had trouble with this aspect, but that is really up to the individual reader. To the positive, he made this book quite readable and intimate, which is far from a given with lawyer types. To Genocide scholars, I think he humanized Raphael Lemkin and others and left a better understanding of the humanness behind the convention that means so much.

Incredibly researched, well written and will tear your heart out if your grandparents are from the general area. Mine were, immigrated in the late 1890's: If not, there is a very good chance my parents nor I would have been alive to read the book. I have given 5 copies of this book to close Jewish and non-Jewish friends.

Exceptionally well researched. It describes and analyses the inhumanity (perhaps that depravity cannot be called "inhumanity" since humans perpetrated it) of some humans against some others. It raises the question whether, in the darkest corners of our minds, we all may really believe that some humans have a greater right than some others, to exist on this planet. It also shows how the Germans are dealing with their past.Lu Rudel

In this page-turning work of non-fiction Philippe Sands combines a personal memoir with a legal and political history. His detective work in unearthing the history of members of his family in Poland at the time of Hitler's rise and the Holocaust that took many of their lives is as enthralling as the best of crime fiction but the crime he is investigating is the crime of a nation against a people. Parallel with his personal story is that of two lawyers who, in one of the many coincidences that characterise the book, came from the same part of the world as his family and who, each in his own way, contributed to the vocabulary of international law. It is an absolutely fascinating work.

British International rights lawyer Phillipe Sands's new book, "East West Street: On the Origins of 'Genocide' and 'Crimes Against Humanity'", is a disjointed look at what I can only say are several interesting subjects, put together in one book. Sands - the maker of an excellent documentary - "What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy" - combines a look at his own family's flight from Vienna to Paris, the lives of the two men who coined the terms, "Genocide" and "Crimes Against Humanity", the life of Hans Frank (the "Butcher of Poland"), as well as the Nuremberg Trials. This is a lot to cover in one book, and the basis of it all is the town of Lemberg/Lviv/Lwow in today's Ukraine..Phillipe Sands' mother's family was originally from Zolkiew, a small town near the larger city of Lviv. His grandfather eventually left the area and moved to Vienna after WW1. It was there that he met his wife-to-be, and prospered as the owner of liquor stores. The family's story is the same as many others who were bullied and beaten after the Anschluss in 1938, but Sands' grandparents and mother were able to find safety of a sort in Paris and survived the war. Most of the other family members were killed in the camps or on the killing fields. But also from the Lviv area and growing up at the same time as Sands' grandfather were two men - Rafael Lemkin and Hersch Lauterpacht - both lawyers who were able to flee the Nazis. Lemkin eventually coined the word "genocide" and Lauterpacht, "Crimes Against Humanity". The use of both words - but in particular "genocide" - were used at the Nuremberg Trials.Another section of the book deals with Nazi lawyer, Hans Frank, who ruled over most of WW2 Poland. Millions of people were murdered in the camps and Frank was condemned to death at Nuremberg. Sands' examines the trial records to show "genocide" was used...by some judges and lawyers. Frank's young son, Niklas, and Horst, the son of Otto von Wachter, grew up with widely differing views of their fathers' and what they did in the war. They're the subjects of Sands' film, "What Our Fathers Did". (I'm linking to the review of the documentary at the bottom of this review)This review has to be the most difficult review I've ever written. If the review is disjointed - and it is - the book the review is based on is all over the place, too. BUT, it is an excellent book. Somehow Phillipe Sands pulls it all together and even if the reader is left with, "huh" at the end, he'll have learned a lot. Sands is a good writer - and film maker - and I have to believe the book is as good as it can be.http://www.amazon.com/review/RJNMB5WU3ROAQ/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B017A53BTY&channel=detail-glance&nodeID=2625373011&store=movies-tv

I had very mixed feelings reading this book. Without a doubt, it is well researched and well written. However, the style of writing is rather choppy, making it difficult at times to stay interested in what you are reading. This leaves a rather uneven flow to the book. I certainly did learn a lot though, since the author is a lawyer and two of the main characters are lawyers there is much legalese in here. A really good read, although not an easy one to get through.

This is a detailed and thorough account of what happened to the Jewish inhabitants of (now) Lviv, Ukraine from 1939-1945, when it was Lvov, Poland. It also traces the uses of the terms Crimes against Humanity versus Genocide, the creators of both terms, against the backdrop of the Nuremberg Trials of 1946. Beautifully told, the reader engages with the story and characters until the end.

This isn't an easy book. It covers a tough subject--the Holocaust--in a unique way, including personal stories with the facts leading up to the Nuremberg trials. Phillipe Sands wove incredible coincidences among the facts. His grandfather, as well as Hitler's lawyer and two attorneys who created the terms "crimes against humanity" and "genocide, all lived at one time or another in the same small village. I will never forger this book.

This book is a gift to everyone who reads it. It will make you think, it will make you laugh and it will make you talk about race. D.L. is a masterful wordsmith and keeps a perfect balance between satire and the painful truth of rampant racism in our country. I love D.L.'s writing style -- it's like he's sitting right next to you, having a conversation and sharing his provocative insights. This timely book is a perfect catalyst to begin crucial conversations about race and I highly recommend that everyone read "How Not to Get Shot" and start talking. I've bought copies for family, friends, and work colleagues. I strongly encourage you to go out -- right now -- and buy this book and read it.

DL is a genius at using satire to shine a light on an uncomfortable and disturbing reality. Great summertime, or anytime read. His storytelling has me laughing out loud at every turn.

I just started reading this but so far I think the book might make my grandsons see this country a different way. I've already lived this and no matter what anyone says black people will never be free from the lynching

Solid. Got the audiobook, and liked Hughley reading it himself. It added to context, especially as a humor piece. He's a good comedian who takes a subject that's hard to talk about and breaks it down into a digestible, pleasant experience. As a white woman who grew up in a black neighborhood, I highly recommend whites give this title a try if you're looking for some illumination. I hope other whites will find this book good at not making them feel defensive, and that they will listen for "huh, never thought of that," moments. Would buy again, and would recommend to anyone I know.

Love This! Raw, honest and very funny! I read this in three days, between work, spouse and children.

This book is best enjoyed if: A.) You know who D.L. Hughley is. B.) You are familiar with his comedy. C.) You like D.L. Hughley’s comedy. I can check the box for all three. At 260 pages it would seem like this book is long and going to take a while to read. I read it in a day. Firstly, the book is only about 6” X 6”. Secondly, there are large margins on the pages. Thirdly, there are illustrations and pictures that fill pages. Lastly, it is very light and easy reading.D.L., in comedic fashion, lists the various “advice” given by white people over the years that should presumably prevent black people from getting shot by the police. While mentioning the "advice" he pretends to advocate it while also pointing out the hypocrisies and even the near impossibility of adhering to some of this advice and still avoid getting shot. While the majority of the book was steeped in comedy there were many nuggets of truth in there along with actual facts. If you can get past the profanity and the gratuitous use of the N-word it is quite enjoyable. I’m not saying that’s easy for everyone—nor am I saying it should be—but if you want to have a laugh while reading very dire stuff then this is a good book for that.

D. L. Hughley has done it again. A quick reader that will give you insight into current events happening in America while also providing coming relief!

GREAT advice for all Black people, so true and funny as hell! What is the tragic and sad, sad truth everyday being Black in this country you are at extreme risk. We must stay prayed up with the Good Lord and try to use your best judgment given the situation.

Dr Myers has written a super easy to read book that I have now recommended to many to deal with mild to severe autoimmune spectrum disorders. Using the methods in this book, my IBS and lupus-like syndrome have been completely put into remission.I read the book on Kindle which was well formatted and listened to the audiobook.

I'm 28 days into this plan, and it's already changed my life. I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease in November 2016 and struggled for many months prior to my diagnosis. I am a 37 year old woman.I have suffered from acid reflux since 2000 (treated with Nexium), chronic allergy induced sinusitis since 2001 (managed with Allegra, Astelin, and Singulair), acne all through high school and my adult life. Graves' Disease added hand tremors, hair loss, muscle weakness, insomnia, general fatigue, IBS symptoms, restlessness, itching, memory loss, rapid heart rate (resting HR of 102 bpm) and more. My thyroid levels at diagnoses were 3 times above normal and I was put on heart medication and thyroid blocking medication (30 mg). After 6 weeks at 30 mg, I felt significantly better. My thyroid levels began to normalize and my doctor cut me to 15 mg. It was awful in about 2 days. So he bumped me up to 20 mg and I felt okay. After 6 weeks T3 and T4 were looking good, still no TSH. He dropped me again to 15 mg. Again in 2 or 3 days I felt awful so we went back to 20 mg. Another 6 weeks went by and we tried yet again to drop me to 15 mg. This time I was also taking prednisone for pain so the lower dose of thyroid blocker worked fine...until the prednisone wore off. So back up to 20 again. This is when I got really frustrated and started researching books. After a couple of days I decided on The Autoimmune Solution. While I read the book I drastically reduced dairy and gluten and immediately began to sleep better. In fact, it was better sleep than I've gotten in as long as I can remember with 2 years of Fitbit sleep logs to back it up. That fueled my desire to follow the plan even more. I dropped to 15 mg again on April 8th. It was going fairly well with the reduced dairy and gluten protocols. Even more promising. I fully started the plan on May 1st, 2017. By May 9th, I was experiencing more hypothyroid symptoms rather than hyper. My hands and feet were freezing and I was tired. With 1.5 hours of being wrapped up in two warm blankets, my hands and feet were still freezing. I called my endocrinologist and was instructed to get my labs done early. Although it takes 6-8 weeks of a dosage change to be reflected in blood tests, I had one after 10 days on The Myers Way and only 4 weeks on the lower dose. TSH returned!!! And both other thyroid levels were in normal. Incredible! Now I'm off Nexium and ALL of my allergy medicines. I feel better than I've ever felt in my adult life. As an added bonus, I've lost at least 6 pounds. While weight loss was not my goal, it's a nice added benefit. My symptoms have resolved. My resting heart rate continues to drop to levels I've never seen in my life. I could not be happier that I made the decision to purchase this book and take control of my health.I'm a real person with real data. I have labs and tracking on my Fitbit to provide solid evidence that this works. I buy my supplements at the local compounding pharmacies and here on Amazon.

I have read a lot of books recently about gut health and how it is the most important aspect of your overall health, but this book completely tops all of them and then some. I want to scream from the roof tops about this book, and I have already made all of my friends read it. Even if you don't have autoimmunity, you still need to read this. This book should be read by every person everywhere.I wanted to wait at least 6 months before giving a review because reviews are useless if you haven't given it some time and effort. I have been on Amy's program more strictly for about 5 months and I can say it's a life changer. My father has horrible psoriasis and I have been terrified of getting it my whole life. I have seborrheic dermatitis and have never been able to get it under control as well as a host of other small ailments. I am 32 years old and thought I was relatively healthy. I realized after reading this book that I had a very bad yeast overgrowth in my gut with all the symptoms that go along with that. So that's where I started....I first did the diet changes and the yeast/candida program by using the caprylic acid and candisol every day for 3 months. I noticed a huge difference in just 2 weeks. All symptoms were gone (I won't get into them, but trust me, not pretty) and what was the most amazing was I stopped craving any carbs/sugar and 5 months later this is still the case. You could put a fresh baked croissant in front of my face and I don't care. On top of the candida program I take the L-glutamine, Glutathione, Fish Oil (Metagenics), probiotics, and Ashwhaganda (which is a recommendation from Dr. Kulreet's The Prime) as well as Magnesium every night. I follow her diet program, but not to an insane degree. I have sugar sometimes, as well as cheese, and wine. I don't have full blown autoimmune disease so there is definitely more leniency with the diet part-- but I really avoid gluten as much as I can.The biggest changes I have noticed are no bloating, regularity, my skin looks great (people tell me a lot that I am "glowing"-- seriously no one has ever said that to me until now), my seborrheic dermatitis is GONE, I have way more energy, less anxiety, brain fog, no cravings, and I had chronic pain in my forearms and elbows from nerve entrapment-- it's 95% relieved. Also, I have always been slim, but since I have started this I lost those last few pounds that bothered me and I don't have any trouble keeping them off now.Yes, the supplements aren't cheap. The diet guidelines can take some getting used to. But there are so many things that can be taken out of this book and applied to your life that will help you feel better, even if you can't do it all. It is a must read!!

The Twenty-Ninth Year

Review

A Rumpus Most Anticipated of 2019 Pick "In poem after poem, there is raw emotion, straightforward storytelling, and unapologetic truth. The poems here read like scars...sometimes they are up-front and easily understood. Sometimes they show up sporting shattered lines or jump from one memory to the next, making you think of a bird that abruptly changes direction mid-flight after hearing a gunshot. That intimate feeling is hard to find, and Alyan offers it here in spades." –NPR "Best exemplifies poetry’s hybridity...blends forms, tangles modes, travels through time and space and leaps from the intensely personal to the acerbically political...with scathing wit, fierce self-examination, and challenging syntax. Alyan takes great risks, drips her full, naked self onto the page, and inspires her readers to embrace and examine our gravest mistakes, for every part of ourselves is a piece of a complicated puzzle that we can’t — mustn’t — stop trying to solve."–Vulture, "4 Poetry Collections That Change the World" "This is the stuff of life, the very essence of the poetic." –LitHub, "Most Anticipated Books of 2019" "There exists, within her poems, the cacophony that pervades our most intimate of relationships, a glistering sheen covering even the most banal interactions. Her poems feel as familiar as the prayers we make up in our own minds, as we feverishly ask for that which we’re only just realizing that we want; they’re a quiet triumph, sacred and profane, and, most of all, grounded in humanity." –Nylon, "Best New Books" "Alyan’s fourth book of poems arrives with the earnest ambition of a debut, but the care of a poet whose lines have earned their sentiment. Poems of sorrow and shame live next to verses of desire. The Twenty-Ninth Year bursts with lamentations, hopes, fears, and a weary but wide faith." –The Millions, "Must Read Poetry" "Alyan moves with grace and courage in her poems, especially in her bare descriptions of a battle with anorexia, the relationship between father and daughter, and the stark realizations she depicts of a young girl tugged between her family's past and a life of American fast food restaurants where she's told how she doesn't fit in. This is coming-of-age poetry from a voice that resists categorization." –Library Journal, starred review “[A] truly stellar collection of poetry…. If the collection wants for anything, it’s that each poem offers only a glimpse or a moment, whereas the subject matter could sustain several more pages of vicious, gripping verse. Luckily, readers can dive into the rest of Alyan’s burgeoning oeuvre: another three books of poetry and a critically acclaimed novel, Salt Houses (2017).”—Booklist, starred review "The past never truly dies in this searing fourth collection from Alyan (Salt Houses), it merely resurfaces in the form of battle scars and familial wounds. The Palestinian-American poet, novelist, and clinical psychologist weaves an ever-shifting narrative that chronicles the personal history that shapes and informs her present. The inheritance of displacement is pervasive, as Alyan describes, and her lines are prone to linger in the minds of readers just like the ghosts that haunt the work itself." –Publisher's Weekly, starred review “Mapping a year of change, Hala Alyan uses wit, metaphor, and powerful imagery in this collection of deeply intimate and truth-telling poems. Her words brave through gender, love, marriage, family, and displacement. They unsettle the hyphen between Palestinian and American. These stunning poems endure the unendurable, illuminating both the powerlessness of pain and the relentless courage of love.  Listen for her lyrical heart: letters, prayers, and portraits. Listen for what overlooks and fires free.”–Aja Monet, author of My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter “Early in The Twenty-Ninth Year Hala Alyan asks, ‘See that eye? Ask it to love you.’ With this, she initiates us into one of the poet’s great questions—how do we, having sounded our murkiest most private psychic waters, still look on ourselves with compassion? How do we ask a sky, a god, a nation, a parent, or a lover to cherish us, knowing all they know about our myriad brilliant failings? ‘In the end, we remake love over and over’—this is the work. Alyan picks up the fragments of a broken past and reassembles them into a livable future made more dazzling for having known brokenness. This is poetry of the highest order.”—Kaveh Akbar, author of Calling a Wolf a Wolf and Portrait of the Alcoholic “Every twenty-nine years Saturn’s in the same position it was in when you were born, often leading to periods of wild flux, transition, and transformation. Hala Alyan’s new book renders in lyric form precisely this kind of reckoning. The Twenty-Ninth Year leaps through time and geography cataloging and archiving snapshots of heartbreak, political violence and resistance, addiction, lust, betrayal, migration, and marriage. Lines such as, ‘exile knows his bones are 206 instruments’ will convince any living reader to immediately go get them tattooed to their ribs. This book is a tongue kiss between the sacred & the profane. This book's essential reading for anyone with a pulse in their veins.” —sam sax, author of Madness and Bury It  “It’s a kind of heaven, The Twenty-Ninth Year, and a kind of hell. When an ex-alcoholic, ex-anorexic breaks the piñata of self open, what falls to earth is mooncakes, sponge cake, lopsided cake, the prettiest cake, pommes frites, waffles, warm bread, donuts, donut peaches, plums, prickly pears, Seven persimmons, first carrot in snow, organic kale, a plate of lobster, a house whiskey on ice, cider, cocktails, wine, and a halo of spaghetti. The word love appears 51 times. Drunk on language, feasting on experience, the poet eats her words without regret, in search of safety, in search of who she’ll be next.”—Jennifer Tseng, author of Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness and The Passion of Woo and Isolde   “Hala Alyan's The Twenty-Ninth Year dramatizes the long journey toward home in poems that vibrate with eros and suffering, with longing and despair. On the cusp of her thirtieth year, that modern marker of maturity, Alyan, like other courageous confessional poets, brings darkness to light: anorexia, alcoholism, addiction, self-loathing. Yet Alyan's is a poetry of radical hope: that we enter into our wounds in order to emerge from exile.”—Philip Metres, author of Sand Opera and The Sound of Listening "Hala Alyan’s The Twenty-Ninth Year has the hodgepodge beauty and intimacy of a Japanese court poet’s pillow book and dazzles like a passport brimming with the stamps of many places. While her previous volume, Hijra, was mythic, spare, and gorgeously imagistic, this new work has a glorious close-to-the-bone, cinéma-vérité feel; in depicting the rollercoaster ride of exile and nonstop adaptation to new worlds, the speaker is both a clear-eyed, freewheeling daughter of the Arab diaspora and an ecstatic, risk-taking celebrant of life." –Cyrus Cassells, author of The Gospel according to Wild Indigo and The Crossed-Out Swastika

much of the story gets lost or left behind in relocating from place to place. we only remember what we experience, or as children when we listen to the experiences of adults, second hand memories. from her poem 1999:I forgot the za’atar my mother said she fed me in Iraq. I forgot my grandmother’s house in Soo-ree-yaa.other forms of erasure found in the poem Aleppo: The Syria in my grandmother is a decade too old. When she dies, she will take it with her.and: … a lone bomb can erase a lineage: the nicknames for your mother, the ghost stories, the only song that put your child to sleep. … Your citadel fed to the birds.the cultivation of a sense of belonging in a stable environment, physical and psychological is lost, when one has a history of leaving and arriving in new cities in new countries, the poems that follow disparate moments, stranded in transit like possessions tossed.a finding of solidarity in dispossession from her poem Oklahoma:‘… This was before the gold rush, the greed of engines, before white men pressing against brown women, nailing crosses by the river, before the slow songs of cotton plantations, the hymns toward God, the murdered dangling like earrings.’although atrocities mentioned are against brown women in her litany, it’s clear she’s also including the historical suffering of black women, making use of intersectionality in her poems. her sense of being made to feel inferior as brown woman among white men and white women appears in several poems.there are poems about kleptomania and sex and too much drinking. poems about a child returning from school or a vacation in another new city, and poems about marriage, struggle to portray what normalcy must look like. some of these poems don’t make sense, they hold together as an experiment in free association around a theme, leaving the reader lost and confused. an autobiography told in fragments. and, yet, everything is familiar to us, the religions, histories and personal stories. confusing and familiar.

This poet has the subtle gift of combining everyday words into mystery. For example, "All the exit routes: someone else's jeep, the bottle of pills, your daddy's DNA." She has either lived or imagined living a lot of interesting things in interesting places--although some things are mundane events she makes interesting. Along these poetic paths she cycles through themes of exile and resettlement, of religious confusion, of Middle Eastern wars and Israeli settlements, of substance and sexual abuse, and of course hoving over everything, questions of identity. One section of the book is devoted to the poet's failed marriage (which apparently went poorly from the start) and lesbian encounters. There is little narrative here; instead, in the manner that's perfect for expression through poetry, the various themes that have dominated her life pop up in different combinations and permutations. Mercifully, the book ends with acceptance, a new relationship with a lover and with herself.

This powerful book of poems reads almost as a memoir, dealing with growing up, straddling different cultures, and trying to come to terms with society as a whole. Alyan succeeds in weaving jarring snapshots of trauma with haunting, and often hopeful, poetry.

Review

Bothell, a crazy quilting specialist with more than 20 years of experience, helps others whose imaginations might fail when decorating the seams of quilts in this delightful collection of stitches. She begins the book with a lesson on piecing, followed by an overview of essentials of hand embroidery (tools, tips, templates, and transfers) and instructions on 61 basic stitches. She then presents over 500 combinations of stitches, including eight pages of back stitches and eight more of blanket-stitch variations. Large pictures of hot-pink thread against beige fabric help to illustrate the intricacies of each individual stitch. Variations with beads and sequins in circles and fans expand the detailed yet doable work. Though the book is geared toward quilters, anyone with an interest in needlework (beginners and experts alike) will make plenty of use of this nifty anthology of stitches. An amazing book by an amazing author! Photography of stitches is excellent and I can already see this will become my go-to reference for CQ stitches. May at first seem intimidating for a total beginner, but take it slow and work your way through the stitches. It will come! I am a long-time CQ stitcher and very choosy about the reference books I acquire. This is one of the best and I recommend it to anyone interested in decorative hand stitching!

Love love love this book - I read it on the plane cover to cover and couldn't wait to get home to start stitching. Only problem was I forgot the book on the plane and now have to order it again - worth it though.

A very good resource book for all types of embroidery. Great ideas for taking basic stitches to the next level.

This is a beautiful book! The key word here is "Combinations." It is amazing what beautiful designs she comes up with using the combination of two or more simple stitches. It was an eye opener for me. This will become one of the most important books in my embroidery library. I do wool applique and one would not think that this book might be applicable - but it is.What a find!

Very complete stitching book. I liked the presentation of stitches. It made it easier to choose the stitches I wanted to use.

Perfect book to either learn hand embroidery or to sharpen your skills.

Great combination stitch ideas. Some with pearls and beads. Also silk ribbon stitches. Endless inspiration!!!I like to do embellished vests and dusters. This will really up my game.

There are other books on the market that show hand stitch embroidery designs, but this one has clear, beautiful, self-explanatory photos that save you a lot of time trying to figure the other books out! This was a great purchase!!
