Rumi's poetry is one long love song to the divine. Frequently, whole poems didn't resonate with me except in their general ecstasy and enthusiasm for life, but I often found individual lines astonishing me with timeless, nourishing, life-affirming wisdom.The work is nearly 800 years old, yet much of the psychological insight and social commentary feels more relevant than ever now, making it a genuine classic of world literature. Rumi comments on a civilization ambushed by fools. He echoes Nietzsche, Eliot, and Yeats, when discussing the emptiness of existence without a spiritual center. He forecasts the collapse of modernism by pointing out the sterile, reductive flaws of a materialistic worldview. Unlike the morbidity of an Ecclesiastes, Aurelius, or Pascal who are often cynical, stoic, or melancholy in their assessment of the human condition, Rumi never wavers in his joyful participation in the infinite dance of the cosmos. The only comparable literary figure in the West who comes to mind is Walt Whitman.It's a privilege and a pleasure to sit at the feet of this ancient Sufi master, to drink from his inexhaustible fountain of praise, love, wisdom, to be illuminated by his intoxicating spirit songs.

Coleman Barks is NOT a translator. It is a fact that he cannot read, write, or speak Persian. He at first plagiarized the translations of other translators, like William Chittick, and later flipped the script and relented by claiming that he is just an Interpreter who “interpreted” others translations (but still prints his books as “translated by...” and gives no credit to the real translators). His interpretations however are white-washed (read the New Yorker article “The Erasure of Islam From The Poetry of Rumi” by Rozina Ali) and do not retain the true essence of Rumi. This book and Westerners’ mania over these translations is like an allegory for colonialism all over again. Invaded, stolen, defiled, and erased.

I was introduced to Rumi in a college Religion course on mysticism, and fell in love with the depth found in the simplicity of his words. I now use this book as a "Magic 8-Ball" of sorts...if I have a problem, I flip through it and stop at random, and read through Rumi's answer for me. His poetry is beautiful and his wisdom leaps off the page into your heart: "you are not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop," "maybe you are searching among the branches, for what only appears in the roots," are only a few of my favorites.

Before you buy this, research Coleman Barks. He doesn't read Farsi and therefore can't translate it, and he says that Rumi came to him in a dream with new poetry.

From what I have been able to figure out, this is THE Rumi book to have. 388 pages of poetry (ok, 388 pages does include intro, index, etc.) And even some recipes in the back. This book is what I was hoping it would be. If you want to read Rumi and don't know where to start, I suggest starting with this book!

Rumi is well known. Not sure what to add other than please read if you haven’t already. Lovers of language, beauty, philosophy or any combination thereof would be hard pressed to find more insightful precise enchanting delicious poetry. Read...pause in delight...read...pause in delight...smile. Repeat as often as needed until you soul is full.

"Was this man from several centuries ago, a modern teenage or young woman? Because he has seen into my heart!"--Girl in my World Literature class who was definitely not wrong about this description. Rumi is able to transcend age, gender, religion, and time. I cannot say enough good things about the poems in this collection and even my mom who is not interested in poetry/literature was in awe at the poems and words. While I had ordered this for class, I can see myself reading them for many years to come.Something that you guys may find helpful is something my professor said, having taught Rumi for a decade or so: "Read Rumi at certain intervals in your life, and you will find that the poems that impacted you in one way, will change into something meaningful in your current life. Continue to read Rumi and you will be inspired."

Coleman Barks is a wonderful writer and translator. I wish I could take a writing course of his! My only complaint with this edition is that he uses endnotes for his clarifications, but does not signal in the actual text body (with a superscript number) what he's expounding. This would've been nice for the academic user. But don't let that stop you. Everything from the quality of the translation to the quality of the hardback books is phenomenal. Purchase away!

Even for a seasoned reader of true crime novels and stories, This book is presented in a manner that I feel most people would enjoy. The stories are short but factual and you can always research the crimes on your own. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to other books on other topics.

While this book is not a comprehensive encyclopedia of crime, it makes a judicious selection of some of the more famous (or infamous) acts of man's inhumanity to man. It manages to present just enough examples of each category of criminal activity without just becoming a boring litany of bad behavior. I must admit, it can be a bit depressing to see the depths some of our fellow human beings can sink to, but it is a compelling read non the less.

Not your everyday book. Read one section, click on another and bounce around the book by your choices. Not always certain I have read the entire book, but it is very interesting. Every crime reader should read it.

Many crimes are described but with scant detail. Constantly seeking out other sources for additional and necessary details. Cannot recommend.

I bought this hoping to learn about the psychology of criminals, patterns in crime, that sort of thing. But all this is is few paragraphs each about a bunch of famous criminals. You could literally google search "list of famous crimes" and get the same content.

Interesting book to read. Written by chapters that cover a certain form or style of crime and then each chapter is written chronologically. It tells about a lot of crimes that I have not seen covered in other crime books.

This entire series are really awesome. Creative way of illustrating and covering the basics of each topic.

Very interesting book. Shared with a few of my friends who enjoyed it as well. Each story is usually 2-4 pages and insightful into different crimes.

What Love Can Do by Virna DePaul....What a beautifully written books. I loved seeing Lilly and Quinn story unfold and all the others. This is a great series, I can't wait to read more books by Virna. Virna DePaul is an amazing storyteller and has became one of my favorite authors. If you have not read this book, I highly recommend it. I received a copy of this novel in exchange for a honest review.Since the death of Conor's mam, he wondered around searching for answers as to what to do with his life. He'd always loved surfing, like his mam, so he took over a surf shop where he taught surfing lessons. During one of his lessons, a gorgeous spitfire of a woman comes storming down the beach demanding that he move his class down the beach...only she didn't ask nicely. Conor considered her request, but only if she said "please".Madlyn doesn't like giving up control. She's been doing everything on her own for so long, it's made it extremely hard for her trust anyone enough to "give up" that control. She does say please and even finds herself turning around to accept an invitation for dinner. Conor is so laid back, that Madlyn doesn't think he could ever be "the one" as she also has a son who's depending on her. She keeps this and the fact that she's still living with her ex a secret from Con. When he finds out, he's upset that she still doesn't trust him enough to handle the complicated situation.I really enjoyed this novel, but I thought Con had to work too hard to earn her trust. I understand she's a single mom, but he went to extremes to prove himself and even that almost wasn't enough. I'm a single mom and I know you're extremely protective of whom you bring around your children. You don't want them getting attached to someone who may break your hearts, but Madlyn almost goes to extremes with Jax. Conor begged to be given a chance with Jax, but she was sooo reluctant. It just seemed Conor was bending over backwards for her to FINALLY make up her mind. I smiled at the playfulness displayed between Con and Jax, then between Con and Madlyn. I'm glad she finally came around! If not, I was going to take Con for myself!!!This novel is the second in the series. While it doesn't have to be read in order, I'm glad I have. I can't wait to see what Virna has in store for book #3!

What Love Can DoAs part of Virna's review team I was given a copy for review.Five sexy Irish brothers hailing from Dublin have come to wine country to learn more about their mother's childhood. Quinn and Lilly have started this romantic series off with a bang and can't wait for the other four brothers to find their true love. Lilly owns the BnB with her mother where two of the boys stayed, while the other three remained in Dublin. She has a wonderful ability to bake muffins, among other things, and has just won a once in a lifetime opportunity. Just as she gets the news, Quinn and Conor arrive in town on their family mission. Their mother, Maggie, was disowned because she followed her heart and married their father and moved to Ireland. Through typical small town gossip word spreads fast and personal family history becomes public knowledge. I loved how they found each other, taught each other to love themselves and trust their hearts. I was moved to tears on more than one occassion. Something about a guy speaking of his mother in Irish brogue to his new love. DePaul writes smart women with strong minds and independent souls while her men are physically attractive and emotionally intelligent. Fabulous book!The Way Love GoesWhen I can relate to the woman I find the story more intriguing. Madlyn is high strung, a stressful job and unusual home life haven't allowed her to destress and enjoy life. Conor, sexy creative surfer with his Irish brogue, is perfect for Madlyn. Plenty of ups and downs with this couple made the story realistic and intense. Not only do we get the Irish accent from the hot younger guy but a small tour of San Francisco adds to the realism and romance of their story. The whole series is set in Northern California wine country with the five O'Neill brothers from Ireland, on a mission to learn about their mother's family. While it is not necessary to read them in order I highly recommend reading the first to get the family history, but each story standalones. As part of DePaul's review team I received a copy for my honest review.I'm Gonna Love YouThe O'Neill's arrived in America trying to learn about their mother's family, the ones that disowned her for falling in love and moving to Dublin. The boys, all five of them, are doing well with The Stylish Irish and two have already found love. Brady is the most business minded of the bunch as the second oldest but also the most serious. He's been through more heartache than most people and he's not even thirty. Brady has a huge heart that needs to find love so he can be himself and live his life. Anna is just the girl for him, full of spunk and sass she is the town daredevil. Having experienced a deadly scare early in her life she has a mission to live life to the fullest without any regrets. She's looking for a good time and thinks Brady just might be the guy to give it to her. Anna is my favorite of love interests for the O'Neill gents, she has no filter when it comes to expressing her thoughts and desires. Brady is just plain sexy with the Irish brogue and banter. Although this is book three it stands alone from the others but I would advise you to read them all, especially the first where their history comes into play. I requested a reviewer's copy from Ms. DePaul so I could leave an unbiased review.

Wasting food makes me feel like a garbage person. This book makes me feel like a food-saving SUPERSTAR. One of the best parts about this book is how Lightner goes into such detailed explanation about techniques for using every bit of produce, how to really make your groceries stretch and last, and how expiration dates actually work. Plus, the recipes are DELICIOUS. You have to make the shakshuka immediately.Before I read this book, I felt defeated by how much food my family wasted; we always had good intentions but so many times we just couldn't get it together. Lightner has helped me change the way I look at our groceries and meal-planning, plus how good waste impacts the world. I'm actually excited by the challenge of using every bit of what we buy. It's a small miracle.Buy this book for anyone in your life who values the environment, saving money, or even just cooking a delicious meal. They will LOVE this entire book.

This book has some great information on how to reduce food waste, if your goal is just reducing your waste output. I was hoping for more ways to use some of the scraps that are normally thrown away -- there are some, but I was looking for things I could use for our local food bank, not things that upper middle class families would use. This is not a "how to save money by using food scraps" book. And I don't really have a food waste problem, since I have dogs and chickens. So while this book would be great for some people, it wasn't a good match for me.

I just bought a second copy of this for a friend because I am so impressed with this book. Very well organized and comprehensive, this book is loaded with helpful hints from how to make apple juice without a juicer to tricks for freezing egg whites. There's a sensible discussion on when you can safely ignore pull-dates. Numerous delicious recipes including one of the most delicious shakshuka renditions I've ever tasted. Besides all of this, you can learn how to plant a garden from vegetable scraps. Highly recommended.

I'm guilty of overbuying food for my family all the time. I end up composting a lot, but would so much rather use some of the scraps/food waste towards making ... other food! Brilliant! The book is easy to understand, and the recipes are simple enough that I make some of them in a pinch, usually with other ingredients I already have. Love the quick tips too!

This is a useful KitchenAid stand mixer cookbook. It has beautiful pictures for the 100+ recipes (192 pages, 2015), but more importantly, it has KA icons for attachments at the top of the page and it contains mixer speeds. Both the icons and the speed information are especially important for new KA owners, so that they can learn to transfer the skills that they learn through making these recipes onto other recipes that they will use with their KA stand mixers..Besides this book, another important activity for new stand mixer owners is watching the Martha Bakes series on PBS, videos of which can be accessed free online. Every new user should watch these videos before they start to use this and other, similar KitchenAid cookbooks.

I actually feel guilty about removing a star, because the recipes inside do look tasty. I intend to make as many of them as I can. I say INTEND because this book is more like an advertisement for the KitchenAid attachments. Since I do not own the pasta, sausage, grinding attachments most of these recipes are useless to me unless I use my old standard hand-crank tools.This book is a good marketing tool for KitchenAid. I just wish there were more recipes I could USE.

I purchased this book to research some hikes on which to take my young son as we start backpacking together and have been thoroughly impressed. Mr. Romano definitely put a lot of research and attention into this book. There is a chart at the front giving an overview of the hikes with certain features noted in the table. Each hike has a small description of the hike, followed by a longer detailed description of the hike (including the the types of trees you encounter, the names of mountains you'll see on the horizon, etc). There is also a map for each hike and very detailed driving directions. I have seen different hiking books which don't have these kind of maps and it's difficult to picture the hike, these maps show the exact route and also have various symbols indicating camping sights, lookouts, wildflowers, etc. I was particularly glad to see that he shows campsites along the trail (even though this is a day hiking book) because we are interested in doing short backpacking trips and primitive camping along the trail. Also listed for each hike is a description of distance, elevation gain, etc. One feature I really appreciate is a graph for each hike which shows distance in miles on the x axis and elevation on the y axis for that particular hike. This way you can visualize the progression of the hike and how difficult it might be.Overall this book is very well done and detailed. It includes a wide range of hikes from easy, kid friendly hikes to lung-busting journeys for the most experienced. I plan on getting several other books by this author.

I own several books from this series and consider them to be the best trail books on the market. Every description is clear and easy to understand, the driving directions are invariably correct, and the ways in which the author describes each hike is so evocative as to make you want to immediately run out and hit the trail. Each of these books also begins with a sizable introduction that lays out a lot of hiking guidelines that are as applicable for the expert as they are for the novice. If you live in or will be traveling to Washington and want to do some hiking close to Seattle this book on the Central Cascades is absolutely the one you want.

Very nice book. About half the size of a standard piece of paper, so it fits into a pack with ease. I have others from the same author, all are good! Nice to have options for long and short hikes. I like reading about hikes in books as they narrow the search compared to online searching. Maps and distances and time are all there. I can go online afterwards if more info is needed.

This book has a ton of great trails that we have used a ton of times, it is small and compact and fits right into my Camelbak. The maps are super detailed, and most of the trails in the books are marked all over the place. It is a great value too, cheaper than in stores like Barnes and Nobles. Most of the books around the greater Seattle area and in the Pacific Northwest are all great values as well!

This is great, I was looking for a write up for Lake Malachite and this book was pretty accurate. Keep an eye on the season for your hike, we went on a scouting hike before our real trip and there was snow up high, the write up was accurate about though and the path itself. Most excellent trustworthy reference for a new hike you haven't experienced yet.

Great book. It was an invaluable reference source during our stay in Washington State. Can't wait to go back and try more of the trails!!

Love this entire series of books. Very informative & incredibly helpful! I take them everywhere. Plus, purchasing the book series gives back a little to Washington Trails Association which is always a great idea.

Trail ratings are accurate. The trail descriptions have detailed important information, such as what other mountains you can see from a view. In comparison, the other book only gives vague description like "magnificent view" etc.Hope they can improve the trail maps.
