It is great to have all the stories in one volume. It would be more enjoyable if the images had been formatted as full pages. I've been reading this book to my children, and the illustrations are too small for them to see. They're fine when I zoom in, but selecting each one and enlarging it is tiresome.

Lovely to be able to share these beautiful illustrations on my tablet with small children as I read them the stories I loved as a child. I hadn't read some of the lesser-known stories either before or for many, many years and was somewhat surprised how scary parts of them were, so for those I edit but we can still enjoy the illustrations.

Delightful the only negativ and that is not a fault of the book itself , is that the illustrations turn black and white when I read on the kindle. On other devices the colours are as good as can be. Some may argue that the morals of the stories are outdated but I say read it together with the children and then talk about any passages that were scary or outdated in morals.

I loved reading this to my granddaughter every week. Since it had a dictionary, we could lookup unfamiliar terms and animals. We enjoyed exploring the fabulous realism and even the inferred violence of the animal world. We were dismayed when our over three thousand pages came to an end.

Beautiful stories that are nice to have out of the original board-book form because those are so bulky. I don't own the books of say The Tailor of Gloucester or Squirrel Nutkin, and they are all so lovely to read and look at Miss Potter's drawings.

The last chapter discusses ways in which professors can apply the seven principles to themselves. Any faculty member or university administrator seriously concerned with education desires to find a trustworthy and research-informed body of content, that has been carefully crafted to be usable and practical, that can serve as a tool or workbook for understanding student learning in ways that lead to clear suggestions for improving curriculum design and course delivery.Yet, that search has been something like a quest for a holy-grail. Sure, everyone teaching at the university level wants to find this type of book. And we have all looked at numerous books on learning and teaching. But none of them were "just the thing."Well, now "just the thing" is here. I have read this book cover to cover. It is exceptionally well done. In fact, I thought it was so well done that I called the publisher to order enough copies to give to EVERY ONE of our faculty and teaching support staff.There is a reason why it has taken "the community" so long to finally create "just the right thing" in terms of a summary of student learning (university level) that is used as a basis for establishing principles for improving teaching.* The work on cognitive science and its extension into the science of learning beyond the laboratory, into classroom and university settings, needed several decades to evolve and mature.* You needed a particular group of people who were professional teachers-- as well as professionals who focused on teaching teachers about teaching-- to stay together long enough to develop deep insight into the pratical issues associated with teaching university level teachers about teaching. I have been a professor for 20 years. Like many of us, I never had meaningful or significant formal training in designing a learning experience aimed at helping my students really learn both the content and skills envisioned by the course. Over the years I have read a variety of books on teaching, attended several conferences focused on improving teaching and tried all sorts of things. During that time, I encountered most of the ideas and practices found here, as well as many others. The characters are richly developed, the social and historical threads are engaging (without being heavy-handed), and the portrayal of the occult is very cool and well-suited to the time/place/culture. I love that Jilo and her ancestors have such fundamentally human motivations and conflicts that drive everything they do.This book is a prequel, so naturally the end of "Jilo" connects to the rest of the series. I would recommend reading the series in the order they were written to get the most out of the connecting passages, but that definitely isn't a requirement.

I thought this book was excellent, actually. I should probably give it 5 stars, rather than 4. Like the other books in the series, it is very well written and hard to put down. I was hoping for everything to come around and reconnect with present day but this is a true backstory of Jilo. It takes one of the most compelling characters in the Witching Savannah series and allows us to see how she became who she is. There is a lot to her story. I think the reason I couldn't bring myself to go all the way to 5 stars is that the story is sad. It is however, very very good.

I have read all of the books in the Witching Savannah series thus far. Really, if you want the story in chronological order Jilo should have come first, since she plays such a pivotal role in the other three books and this is her story BEFORE the events of the other books.That being said, this is the best written book in the Witching Savannah series. The first book (The Line) read as a bit of a new author who really needed one or two more rewrites and a better editor. However, as the books progressed, the writing improved. This is a Amazon-published series, and with these books, you often find authors developing their skills as they go.If you're willing to go through the journey with an author, you can find some good ones along the line. The Witching Savannah series is one of those diamonds in the rough. If you like magical, semi-urban fantasy stories written by new authors, then give this series a try.

If you haven't read this author yet, please do so. I have read many of JD's books and every one of them is great. Once in awhile, I will run across a writer that I just have to read everything he/she has written. Also, I must say at my age I have read many authors and few have impressed me as J D. "Jilo" is a character we first met in the first "Witching Savannah" series. With her strong countenance and presence insisted that J D tell her story. I feel her story isn't over because there is more to tell.Please read "Witching Savannah' series and the last one {so far, I hope}. You won't be disappointed. This man knows how to write a story!

What a wonderful book to be the 4th in the series. A great novel of history and foundation to learn of Jilo's past and all the previous Witching Savannah novels woven in the pages. Reading this fills in knowledge of the future. From her young life, her school years and her coming into magic. I love how the relation to Edwin and Ginny are given a beginning here. It explains why Jilo feels the way she does in earlier novels. And, how her life is tied to the Taylor's.Just love these books and the people in them. Love the writing style and character development! Sure hope there are more to come! I don't think I could get tired of the progression of their lives unfolding on the pages!

I liked this story. I liked the knowledge of how Mama Jilo came to be. I liked learning how how all the witches were connected. I thought it was a good "after" prequel, since it came after the other books.I would reread the book and I did like the many variety of characters. There were a few relationships I couldn't understand, so had a hard time giving it 5 stars because of that. I know it is life and that there are people that have those types of relationships, but it makes me sad for them.Really liked all the layers and generations in this story. Would suggest for the reader who enjoys magic and witches!

Jilo is a prequel to the Witching Savannah Series. It starts telling the story of the Wills women starting at Tuesday Jackson funeral. Jilo is one of my favorite characters of this series and I love getting to know her better. We also get to see Ginny Taylor in a different light also. She apparently was a very admirable women. This book should be read after the Void. Even though this is a prequel you will need some background knowledge to understand some aspects of this book.

To date I have read all of the "Witching Savannah" Books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I love the kind of book that tells a ripping good story and teaches you the history of a people and an area. It's an education, but you grow to love (and in some cases hate, the people you read about.)J.D. Horn writes so well that you tend to forget that what you are reading is a work of fiction even though much of the history seems to be factual... I don't know where it will go from here but I was sad to find myself at the end of this book. I hope that there will be more to say about these families and the Gullah people. I have read other books about the history of the Gullah people but not many that were so well written. Thank you for writing them, and thank you for bringing the history of the people to life...capsaicinus

I ordered this book along with the companion collection, Portraits of American Bikers: Inside Looking Out. I found them both very interesting and well done. I love the vintage feel of the black and white pictures and the candid shots are so telling. I read one review in which the individual was upset about the pictures where men are kissing each other. If you know anything about outlaw biker culture, especially during these years, those photos should make you laugh. If you are looking at them as an outsider, then you are giving the bikers the response that they want to get from kissing each other; that of shock and repulsion. Outlaw bikers in the 1960's used this behavior frequently in order to affirm their individuality and separate themselves from "citizen society". Love the pictures and the overall feel of this book! If you want a candid look into everyday outlaw biker culture during the beginnings of its origin, this will not disappoint you.

There are no "good" photos, technique and technique requirements are absent, but as a psychiatric record, I would see professional advice. More so than the bikes displayed, I would love to get my hands on that Fender Strat, and the chick ain't bad looking either, if you are into bee-hives? No, I wouldn't give up my copy of the book, but I try not to look at it too often, probably because the women look beat up.

for a portrait of "american" bikers - there was way too much pictures showing NAZI SWATISKAS and GUYS KISSING. I know wearing the swatiska AND guys kissing was indeed a part of the "shock" 60's Biker culture to some extent - but we don't need to give it so much advertising - as done in this book.I think abit more focus on the bikes could have easily replaced the more offensive stuff and the Book would have still been true.my $.02....

This book certainly confirms the old saying. While many claim to know what it was like back then, most current books are written by snitches or feds about events in the 1990s on. Very few are writing, with any real knowledge or experience, about the old days. The book deserves better reviews than it has received. I was really surprised by the reviews that challenged the photographer's daughter as being "unaware" of what a real biker is. Um, yo, wannabes, she lived it. These pictures make me wish digital cameras weren't so popular. I'd forgotten how great the old cameras were, no pixels or digitizing or cheating with photoshop. These photos are raw and real, and refreshing. Hope to see more from Flash Productions. This is a time we'll never see again.

This book had me in tears... the memories of the old bikers were relived over and over as I turned the pages of this book. The quality of both the photographs and the book are excellent and I take my hat off to Ms Roberts for the love and soul that went into creating this book. I have not only bought one for myself, but another 3 for old timer friends.. all of whom have been awed by this. It has turned out to be a gift that has been most appreciated by my friends... and it is a mainstay in my library in a place of honor.

I feel as though this book left me with a clear understanding of the relationship between the Military working dog, Lucca and her handler, what seems to be an unbreakable bond. Top Dog is so much more than a book about a dog, you meet Lucca's other dog friends in the story along with their handlers, you truly get the whole picture of what these amazing animals do and how valuable they are to our Military.

For those of us with an abiding interest in dogs and their unique abilities serving our soldiers during times of conflict, I insist that you go out of your way to read Maria's remarkably poignant account of one heroic service dog's journey through the hell that was war in Iraq and Afghanistan. While Lucca proved to be a specialized service dog of unequalled courage and ability, the book hinges almost entirely on the heartfelt, and heartrending, relationship that she forged with the two Marines who served alongside her as her handlers. Yes, there is the reality of terrible loss, both of soldiers and service dogs. But, the ultimate triumph of Lucca will move even the hardest of hearts. I love anything K9 related, but I have an obsession with military dogs. And Guide dogs, and companion dogs, and service dogs....and well, dogs in general. But reading about their service is inspirational. I'm a dog trainer and I love to hear about their actual work,hoping to apply some of the behavior principles to everyday training. Lucca is just a super special dog, and hearing about her injurywas hard to read. But there she goes again, helping someone she doesn't even know....because I also have a dog with 3 legs. He's a pug and gets along just fine.....and also he's in great company. Read this book if you're a dog lover, you won't be disappointed.

So when I spotted the book, I of course had to read it. As a dog lover, this was an emotional story; as someone who respects and admires our armed forces, it was an emotional story. Very well written by Ms. Goodavage, many times from the prespective of Lucca in a respectful manner, not in child's speak.Grateful that DoD and all those involved now honor military dogs as soldiers with all the benefits of care and support that they deserve in serving in our war zones and protecting our soldiers from harm. this book was a testimony to those changes.

I just finished reading "Top Dog," the story of MWD Marine Hero Lucca K458. Maria Goodavage captured the spirit and essence of Lucca, her Handlers, war, the bond between all three and Lucca's well deserved Happy-Ever-After Retirement. It's a must read for all who love, honor, and respect the immeasurable accomplishments of Military Working Dogs and their Handlers. Quite simply, I loved it. Thank you Maria for taking us on this incredible journey with Lucca.

This was such a beautiful story about a working (Marine) military dog. Mamma Lucca certainly deserves all the accolades given to her. I am so happy she was able to retire with her handler Chris Willingham. He was with her from the beginning. He truly is a wonderful person, as he was willing to share Lucca with Juan "Rod" Rodriguez who was her co-parent. I also want to thank all the other military working and retired dogs and their handlers who put their lives in danger to protect our troops. My heart also grieves for those handlers and their dogs who didn't make it. I want to also thank their families for their sacrifices.In my opinion, this book is a must read!
