Ursula K Le Guin. I had heard the name many times growing up. It was always spoken with respect by people who held my respect. And yet, for all of that I had not read her work until now. I wonder how different my life would have been if I had read her work sooner. I'll never know.This book is, at its simplest and least descriptive, a thought experiment. What if there were a world where gender as we know it did not exist.But that is not the half of it. It is not even close.This book examines how nationalism can be wonderful and yet poisonous. It compares the societies of differing nation-states. It looks at humanity's role in nature. It stares unflinchingly at love in various forms and in the end, the reader has gone through a journey nearly as transformative as the one taken by our protagonist, Genly Ai.My only true complaint stems from the idea that Genly's gender biases are so strong that he consistently labels the Gethenians as he despite having been briefed of their genderless status before beginning the assignment.Still ignoring the pronoun confusion, this was an amazing book. It is thoughtful and thought provoking. It is wise and wonderful. And though a world as cold as Winter sounds like my own personal hell, I will revisit the characters again with pleasure.

This book changed my thinking about gender. The planet natives are normally gender neutral (one can't say androgynous as they are neither male nor female, rather than both) until they enter kemmer, a sort of heat, when they become randomly male or female. After kemmer they go back to the neutral state, unless pregnant. So one person can be the mother or two and the father of three.This book was published in 1969, and LBGTQ people may find some of the ideas dated, but it remains a profound exploration of what happens when the basic traits by which one is defined in one's own society don't apply in another culture. I was surprised when I re-read "The Left Hand of Darkness" to realize it could apply to any trait - race, religion, even political affiliation.Highly recommended.

This book started out quite slow. I did not know if I would be able to finish it. All I can tell you is, hang in there, learn the weird names, and it will be worth it. In the story, she tells something not quite relatable in words alone. One of my new favorite authors.

On Gethen, human envoy Genly Ai has been sent to convince the planet’s leaders to join the Ekumen, a loose confederation of planets who do not rule one another, but who cooperate in matters of interest to all Ekumen members. Barriers to Ai’s success include Gethenian pride, antipathy and discord between that world’s rival nation-states, and Ai’s lack of understanding in a global culture fueled by the ambisexual nature of Gethenians. The only native who believes the Ekumen can save Gethen is Estraven, a native whom Ai regards with suspicion. But when politics casts Estraven in a criminal light, Ai is dragged into a fierce powerplay and finds himself imprisoned, beaten, and left for dead. Only by abandoning his prejudice—and learning to trust the Otherness of his savior—can he survive his ordeal.The Left Hand of Darkness was originally published in 1969 and is the title that established Le Guin as a science fiction writer. It’s incredibly intricate, an excellent example of worldbuilding. Politics and governance are well-represented, if convoluted, which makes it all the more believable. The climate on Gethen is wintry; inhabitants and their lifestyles reflect this in every detail. But what captivated me most was the nature of Gethenian sexuality. On Gethen, gender is irrelevant. Though Ai uses predominantly masculine pronouns throughout the narrative, native humanoids on Gethen are not born male or female. They are neither—until they enter “kemmer,” a regular period of increased hormonal activity in which Gethenians are driven to find a partner who is also in kemmer, for sex and procreation. Hormone levels determine which partner becomes the inseminator and which becomes the recipient. If the recipient becomes pregnant, they remain “female” throughout the gestation period, after which they return to normal. This cycle drives the entire culture, coloring every aspect of Gethenian society.Though this isn’t the only detail to recommend the book, it’s definitely key to the story. At the time it was written, Gethenian sexuality drew a lot of attention among readers and reviewers; but it’s still relevant today. While some have criticized Le Guin for homophobia, and while Le Guin later expressed regret that she’d portrayed Gethenian norms as heterosexual, the fact remains that the story explores the nature of gender in our own society, as well as on Gethen. For my own part, I found the development of friendship and love between characters so widely diverse much more meaningful than when or how or even whether copulation occurred.In any event, The Left Hand of Darkness is a classic in science fiction literature, a multi-layered story that explores not only cultural divides but sociological ones as well as deep, philosophical quandaries, a must-read for all sci-fi fans. Groundbreaking and evocative, I found myself rooting for both Ai and Estraven, and was sorry to turn the last page. Only one of multiple novels set in the Hainish series, LHoD can be read as a standalone tale. One caveat: Le Guin runs heavy on detail and subtlety. It isn’t exactly an easy read. If that bothers you, dear reader, push through. I promise the payoff is worth it.

This is a wonderful non-fiction book! Any child, (or adult for that matter,) interested in dinosaurs will find it amazing and full of information.A Hadrosaur, with nearly complete skin and soft tissue, was discovered in Hell Creek, North Dakota by a 16 year old who'd been fascinated with dinosaurs since he was 6. After he realized what he had found, he wrote an e-mail describing his discovery and including a picture, to Dr Manning, a paleontologist at the University of Manchester in the U.K.! An army of specialists soon surrounded the site. The book has pictures and descriptions of the recovery and moving of the mummy, and the results of the studies.At the end of the book, there are pages showing the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretacious dinosaurs, and also drawings and descriptions of the various fossils found at Hell Creek.It's also a beautiful, imaginativly bound book.

Book looks like it will be a fun read to my daughter but the new book I bought was damaged and the binding is as if used.

About half of this book consists of captivating illustrations of dinosaurs and the other half is photographs of the present day process of finding and analyzing fossils. The last few pages contain an illustrated glossary of dinosaurs. Certainly not an exhaustive list, but a nice spread. This book is aimed at young readers, I would guess in the 8-12 range, but even as an adult I find it interesting enough, mainly for the visual aspects. Our 2.5 year-old loves the illustrations and will listen to a "reading" of the book.

My grandson loves dinosaurs and this was a great find. Beautiful book.

I bought this book on sale, and for the price I didn't expect much. My son likes dinosaurs though, so I figured I would give it a try. My 3 1/2 year old LOVES it! The text is a bit much so I kind of paraphrase it for him, but he wants to hear it over and over and over again. This is based on a real discovery, but there is an added story line to it. My son is just fascinated that the scientist found his first fossil when he was six.

when I got this book, it was brand new. as soon as I pulled it out it ripped\tore in several places. I don't know if the envelope was too snug or what happened but I did go ahead and donate it.

My son is an avid dinosaur geek and this book does not dissapoint, has a lot of new info not repetitive stuff like a lot of the other books I've gotten for him.

Got this book for my son's scout project. They had to study dinos. It was very good book and all the boys love it.

Sweet love story with time travel, druids, immortal beings... It's been interesting and out of my normal comfort zone for sure. But worth the time spent. Characters have such charisma and have been nicely matched. Well worth your time to read.

I pic ked up this series by chance. After reading the first book i couldn't wait for this one, book 2. i couldn't put it down until I had finished it and now absolutely need to get the thied one. loved the story and the characters.

I have always love the Historical Romance. Then got in to the Highlander fantasy and Time travel. I haven't read in ages and the author I used to read is not writing on the Highlander Time travel so I had to find another one to check out and Love Hazel Hunter. I have completed 3 of her series as of to date 2 which are complete and the last is still in the middle of adding to the story. I LOVE HER STORIES. I just received the 3rd in this series and fixing to start it but Absolutely love what I read. Thank you for giving me my most favorite style of stories back.

What else can I say but these series books end way too quick for me. I try not to read quickly but I get involved and need to know what happens. Then the book ends and I do not have any money I read. Thank you H. H. for these series.

As a 50 year-old menopausal woman who knows a lot about female sexual health, this book was literally worthless. How about chapters, or paragraphs even, on menopause and aging? I don’t have kids, don’t have disease illness or cancer, but do experience menopause (like all women eventually do). I asked for a refund on this from Amazon, the book is so worthless.

The writers of this book have a mission; which is to deconstruct the myths regarding a women's sexual apparatus. It is a light read. I actually wished they included more references which helped them to reach their considerations. Besides, most of the time, the book speaks very broadly about the concepts, I wasn't satisfied with the depth of knowledge this book provided which just scratched the surface. Certain times, it even gives you prescriptions about genital hygiene. But it doesn't go beyond the level of information provided on a brochure.

You already know it gives you pleasure and hopefully orgasms, with or without a partner. It also provides stimulation for your partner. We know it's a baby exit. We are inconvenienced every month when our period starts and raise your hand ( mine is raised) if you suffered excruciating pain the first few days Every.Single.Mother.Loving.Month! Then there are yeast infections, genital warts, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. We can develop endometriosis, fibroid tumors, ovarian cysts, and have a retroverted uterus (hand up again). And don't forget about PMS,PCOS, PID, STD's, and FTD. *snicker, I threw that last one in for laughs . But the book isn't just about the negative aspects of your "Venus mound." It's everything about it, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It covers everything from A (anus) to O (Orgasm Bible) to V (vagina) plus some.We live in an age where we should know these thing and be able to talk freely about them. So why don't we? In my case it was my parents failure to educate we four girls. Yes, I learned for myself but not without a great deal of stumbling the first 25 years.This book this perfect for young adults and up.The Wonder Down Under: The Insider's Guide to the Anatomy, Biology, and Reality of the Vagina . It covers everything from A (anus) to O (Orgasm Bible) to V (vagina) and more. This book is perfect for young adults and up..I know most of the information in this book because I've worked in medicine for over 25 years. Before that I knew only the bare essentials.

As a mom, I wish that this book had been available when my girls were younger, not because I wasn’t willing to talk to my kids about sex, but because sometimes, kids don’t want to ask certain questions of their parents. And we all know that they don’t want them getting information from other kids who don’t know either.The best part of this book—if I had to choose—is the discussion of desire. While the authors see sex as a positive thing, they also provide a ton of information for women in determining how they know they’re ready for sex, and their discussion of what goes on in women’s brains regarding sex is a wonderful antidote to those who see women as either sexually unresponsive or always happy to oblige. This book assumes that women are agents of their own desires and capable of deciding when and if they want to have sex.I have recommended this book to many of my friends.

I really enjoyed how casual the authors talked about the myths and realities surrounding the female body. The illustrations they've got in here including the cartoons are so cute and funny. This is a book I plan to include in all my friends Christmas gifts this year. A good informative read.

The wonder down under goes over a lot of facts and information about the vagina. The book I think was written really well also, the way it was written made it a lot easier to read it was not like a boring medical textbook.

The book is up to date, to the point, and most importantly, easy to read. As a medical student I found this book to be more informative than most of my text books, and it covers subjects my professors would never talk about. I have also recommended it to patients, who found it supportive and educational.

This book demystifies a topic that I've been ignoring for a long time. If you need a book on DNSSEC, buy this.

As long as you have some existing clue around zone files and DNS, the book will take you from no DNSSEC at all to fully implemented in less than 100 pages. It's a dry topic, but there's enough humor sprinkled into the book to make it an enjoyable tech read.Use it to learn, or use it as a quick reference - either way will work. If you have any DNS server(s) to manage, you're the target audience. I expect DNS without these security extensions will go the way of telnet vs. ssh, and the question won't be _if_ you learn about DNSSEC, but _when_.

Google and Yahoo do not use DNSSEC as of today, to that says a lot about DNSSEC's viability
