I should say straight off that I loved the Julia Grey books, and was sad when I read on Deanna's blog that the series had come to an end. Unfortunately, this series doesn't hold up quite as well. Though the book was enjoyable enough, the mystery was rather subpar, the backstories often didn't make sense, and I was left unimpressed by Veronica as a character.I seem to be in the minority, but I didn't particularly like Veronica. I am all for the Amelia Peabody-esque woman who takes charge and flouts convention, but there is a fine line between being a bad*ss and being a jerk. The fact that this book opens with Veronica lamenting the fact that she can't shed a tear over the grave of a woman who adopted her immediately set Veronica in the latter camp for me. She is eye-twitchingly narcissistic, oftentimes rude, and jarringly devoid of empathy. However, what bothered me the most is that even though she is simply the cleverest of all clever Victorian Mary-Sues, she has an appalling lack of critical thinking. I am no stranger to the character who can't figure out what the reader has deduced fifty pages earlier, and normally it doesn't bother me. But it is rather grating going through pages of Veronica bragging about her superior talents in morse code, embalming, and escaping kidnappers when chica can't figure out the obvious, like there *might* be something suspicious about her adopted aunts' habit of changing addresses every six months or that the "robber" that stole nothing and tried pull her into an awaiting carriage might not have been a robber but a would-be abductor. It takes Veronica 3/4 of the book to accept this. It takes a clever reader two pages, a less clever reader three, and the most sleep-deprived and/or intoxicated reader four, where it is helpfully pointed out by a secondary character.That's not to say that she doesn't have her moments. But they are far and few between. Fortunately, the other characters in the book are much more pleasant. Stoker is your typical dishonorable Honourable with a heart of gold. Other characters were similar tropes, but Raybourn's good dialogue keeps them from being routine.The second aspect that I didn't like was that the backstories of characters didn't seem to line up well. Veronica is about 24, and yet has visited (off the top of my head) Switzerland, Ireland, Italy, Costa Rica, Sumatra, Java, Mexico, Malaysia, Sicily, Corsica, the Rocky Mountains, and South America. I mean, it's technically not impossible, but combined with time back in England to care for both sickly aunts, it just seemed way too unrealistic. Stoker is the same way--he has five different histories (knife thrower, explorer, surgeon, taxonomist, etc) though as he is older and left home at 12, I give him more lee-way to have cultivated an interesting backstory.Finally, the mystery just wasn't particularly good. An orphan main character in a mystery is bound to have an interesting parent or two. It's just how it works, so the fact that the mystery was centered on this reveal was a letdown. The action scene at the end had a similar "eh" feel, and was based on the laughable premise that bad guys and the police would not immediately rush to a place where they know their intended victim/suspect is, but instead wait several hours because VERONICA ASKED THEY COME AT 9 AND EVEN SENT OUT INVITATIONS, OKAY?That said, it was a fine enough read and I have hopes that Raybourn will make her follow up better. Plus, the cover art is cool.

Rarely do I leave a negative review. Rarely have I met a more annoying main character or struggled so hard to finish a book. Veronica Speedwell is an unrealistic character for the time but the main problem is how truly overbearing and unlikable she is. Obviously, cast in a modern-day feminist light, I could barely read without rolling my eyes I would have loved her if she'd been more like the original feminists. But we get this Veronica- complete with a rather cold-blooded attitude toward her sex partners. She even refers to them as "playthings". Eye roll. This is what feminism has been reduced to? Not only that, she's offered as a paragon of perfection, with no real character arc. She's exactly the same person at the end of the book as she is at the beginning, except for her feelings for Stoker. Stoker. I wanted to like him. The problem with Stoker is that he's completely cowed by Veronica and that lessens his appeal so much. Love the cover, though.

Her initial presentation is a bit of an odd duck, but from there she becomes progressively prickly and defies convention and her fellow man seemingly compulsively. She seeks oft to shock or offend, which is tiring to read.The mystery of why she is pursued by murderers is dragged out, then ridiculously over the top when revealed. There simply was not much I can recommend about the plot or characters.There is no romance between the main characters; and the historical setting seemed more creative re-imagining of history than an actual historical setting. The prose itself was excellent. That almost made up for the rest…but not quite.

Stephen Mumford is Professor of Metaphysics and Head of the School of Humanities at the University of Nottingham. He gained his PhD from Leeds in 1994 and then wrote Dispositions (OUP 1998), Laws in Nature (Routledge 2004), and David Armstrong (Acumen 2007), as well as editing Russell on Metaphysics (Routledge 2003) and George Molnar's Powers (OUP 2003). He was co-investigator in the AHRC-funded project Metaphysics of Science and has been Chair of the British Philosophy of Sport Association. He is currently writing a book on sport: Watching Sport: Aesthetics, Ethics and Emotions. Rani Lill Anjum is an Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. She received her doctorate from the University of Tromso, funded by the FRIHUM program at the Norwegian Research Council (NFR). This book is an essential read for anyone interested in powers. I'm a huge fan of Mumford's writing style. He writes with the clarity and precision only found in premiere philosophical writing. Although I don't agree with the overarching thesis of the book - that all properties are dispositional -, I do find the argument's compelling, and forceful.

In this book, Stephen Mumford and Rani Lill Anjum present their theory of causal dispositionalism, that is, causation based on dispositional properties, or powers. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the philosophy of causation.Powers do the causal work in our world, according to the authors: effects are brought about by powers manifesting themselves, and the manifestation is itself a further power or set of powers.A central idea is that powers don't necessitate their manifestations - they dispose toward them. Causality has long been associated with the idea of necessity, and necessity (and the sense of constant conjunction) is too strong to describe causation. The main insight here is that other factors can prevent or interfere with the expected manifestation (and, indeed, they often do).To help demonstrate how a disposition can be enhanced or, importantly, hindered by other powers, the authors develop a vector addition diagram. Only when the sum of vectors (with various strengths and directions) exceeds some threshold do we get the manifestation. They extend the model to more complex scenarios to argue that the model is robust enough to explain non-linear and even "emergent" behavior.In addition to arguing strongly against necessity, the authors want to overthrow another usual notion. The authors reject as misguided the typical "two-event" conception of causation, where cause is temporally prior to effect, in part because no one has a compelling account of how you get from one to the other. Instead causes and effects are simultaneous - they are two aspects of a temporally extended process which brings about a change.An important and creative part of the book explores the distinctive modality of dispositions in more depth. Dispositional modality (weaker than necessity but stronger than "pure" contingency) is the primitive and fundamental modality of nature. We derive necessity and possibility from our prior experience with dispositionality. Mumford and Anjum argue that we do indeed perceive causation, and present what they see as the clearest examples of this in the case of bodily sensation and specifically proprioception.The book concludes with a compelling application: showing how the theory fits with processes studied in biology and genetics.

Harley becomes the best country music star she can be with her 2 ex seals by her side and with her forever. Loved this short novella.

Hayley is a big time pop star who is looking for new bodyguards. Chase and Killick apply for the position. Hayley’s manger doesn’t like the, but Haley wants them. She gets drunk the night before a day full of interviews. They save her from getting herself into a lot of trouble. She lets it be known that she wants both of them. Can they make it work between them? Will slimy mangers try to keep them apart? Will Haley be able to sho the world who she really is as a singer?

Killick and Chase become Hayley's bodyguards. Her career isn't what she dreamed it to be. Her manager is such a jerk. Hot Alpha Male Seals to the rescue. I love how they deal with Rick. Hot and steamy scenes with Killick, Chase and Hayley. Another fun short read from Eddie.

Hayley is a singer masquerading as a pop singer rather than the country singer she truly is. It takes the patience of a saint to read this, especially for an old reader. The small light type on super shiny paper is hard to read, even with a magnifying glass. Because of this impediment, I can't comment on the content I can't read. The paper facilitates lovey reproductions of the art work. However, I was looking for more on a theory of contemporary beauty as portrayed through advertising and commercial media.

A beautiful book. I misplaced mine (loaned it to someone? or it's someplace where it will show up? or?) and so missed having it around to just pick up and peruse from time to time that I replaced it with this used copy in like-new condition. I don't do that often and is probably the strongest evidence I can offer of the pull of this volume. I also own Eco's companion book on Ugliness -- purchased many years after the first HoB. Hope I don't lose it, because I enjoy having it, too, but would be less compelled to replace it. Besides the visuals, Eco's text is a pleasure.

Great Quality of Product and Fabulous Service

The book receives five stars for the selection of very good color reproduction. The text as many others have pointed out is ponderous. Before buying the book have a look at amazon's own review of this book. They for instance note that only half of the book is written by Eco.The book is a fairly irreverent description of beauty. The book is really a description of female beauty in the western world through the centuries. I find the pictures and the text elaborating on the pictures interesting. The other part of the text is too tedious for my taste. I an not particularly interested in reading lengthy sections of other people's writing that the author considers important.Eco has also written The Infinity of Lists: An Illustrated Essay in the same series. That book is actually rather impossible to understand (two stars), but it also has beautiful pictures.The current book is worth four stars; barely.

A well written and interesting book but you had better have very good eyes. The largest text is about 1/16 inch high but some is even smaller this, both sizes are used throughout the book, (perhaps 12 and 10 point). Not easy to read, especially in the (extensive) sections where its colored light blue. What would have possessed anyone to do this i have no idea, though I am referring to the paper back version, maybe the hard cover is a larger format.

Only Umberto Eco could write a book that defines beauty through the ages of western culture as this one does. He looks at the great contemporary writers for insight into the great contemprary artists. Umberto brings Plato to the front to explain early Greek art, and brings in Hume to explain humanist style. It is a classical book that should be used in colleges to not only introduce people to art but to thinking about art and words. The color plates are wonderful. What I wish is that the Italian CDrom was available in English. One can see from the style used that this book was a great interactive CDrom.Reading Umberto's insights and looking at great art..what a wonderful way to spend a morning at starbucks!

This is a beautifully bound book, even next to its original hard cover release. It's nice and compact without compromising the quality of the photographs. Even though I got this for research purposes, I've decided not to mark the pages with my notes so that I can have this sit on my coffee table. A must for all Eco fans !
