About the Author

Graduating with a BA in English, Writing, and Philosophy from the College of St. Benedict and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations from the University of Minnesota, Mary Logeland has always been interested in both travel and writing. Having been inspired by four globe-trotting aunts and an imaginative mother who took many armchair journeys, travel and the resulting stories (and yarns) were a part of Logeland’s life from an early age. Prior to elementary school, her aunts would return from Asia, Europe, or the Middle East with costumes and other gifts accompanied by pictures and stories of their adventures. When Logeland entered kindergarten, she was convinced that she was Chinese, not Irish, and, knowing some Chinese vocabulary and songs, she persuaded her classmates that she was indeed Chinese. One of her earliest photographic memories is of her Aunt Peggy Kelly, clad in her Special Services uniform, astride her camel and surrounded by six camel-mounted Bedouins. This interest in camels motivated Logeland to visit Morocco and venture into the Sahara Desert via camel-back. Since those long-ago fantasy years, Logeland has traveled extensively in the United States, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Nordic countries. Her favorite travel involves small group adventures to Third World or Developing Countries – the roads less traveled. Being a lover of the written word, Logeland journals her adventures and is also concentrating on writing the stories of the four aunts who nurtured her love of travel and the lives of her other interesting family members.

I am planning a bicycle trip in Mongolia next spring so I am reading any books I can find to get a taste of the country.Mary's retelling of her trip is simple yet compelling, I enjoyed "seeing" Mongolia through her eyes. This book is exactly what I wanted it to be; a first hand account of travel in Mongolia.
