The translator/editor, Nigel Bryant, has two theses here:1. That this book is the first of the Arthurian cycles and paved the way for the later ones, such as the Lancelot-Grail and Le Morte d'Arthur2. That medieval romances were meant to be read aloudI can agree with both points.In Joseph, Robert de Boron picks right up from the Gospels and Acts. It reads like scripture, and it is dry like scripture. Coming off of reading the thrilling chivalric quests of Chretien and the Perceval continuations, I found this quasi-sacred material incredibly slow moving and dry. It is rich with grail lore: indeed, de Boron is literally inventing the Christian grail story before our eyes. But something about it is just incredibly slow, dull, and uninteresting to me. I suppose comparing this material to tales of chivalry, it is by nature less enthralling.The same continues through the Merlin story, which has a Geoffrey of Monmouth feeling of very large events told without much attention to reader immersion. This works perfectly well in keeping with Bryant's insistence that these romances were performed orally and not intended for private reading. Well, I am reading this stuff privately, and it's pretty hard-going. The Merlin story drags on and on, picking up once Arthur is born. Here we get the sword in the stone and familiar Arthurian lore. Prior to that though, with Merlin telling prophesies and all the stuff with Uther Pendragon, I had to put the book down for weeks and weeks until I could force myself through it all.Finally we come to the best section, the Didot-Perceval, as it is called, which is essentially a gently-edited version of Chretien's poem. Notably, Perceval's slaying the red knight is absent; here, he is taught not to talk so much by his mother; Gawain's whole narrative is omitted (thankfully, for that was clumsily-handled by Chretien), and the Fisher King material is much enhanced by Robert de Boron's lore. However, the editor of this Perceval story includes Robert de Boron's material in such a comprehensive way that you could almost omit reading the Joseph and Merlin stories and still understand what is going on. The Perceval story is thrilling, as always, seemingly shattering the theory that this material was intended for oral performance given the detailed descriptions of settings, character appearances, emotions, etc. Indeed, Perceval stories are always imbued with such literary realism that I would argue their authors always have in mind more than mere oral performance, as they are great and absorbing works of literature.I should add also: Perceval's romance with Blanchefleur is also missing here. I felt that the Perceval continuators handled their marriage incredibly poorly, and I'm disappointed that it was not included here. I certainly would prefer them to have a "happily ever after." But here the Perceval editor decided that Perceval would succeed the Fisher King and "give up chivalry." At that point the Perceval story seems to end.But it doesn't! Clumsily, a "death of Arthur" story is tacked on, returning to the birds-eye-view descriptions of large armies, minimal description, and other Song of Roland-type features totally affirming Nigel Bryant's thesis that these stories were orally performed. Just like Joseph and Merlin, this Death of Arthur addition to the Perceval tale is slow-moving, totally ahistorical, totally unbelievable, and even silly. (Julius Caesar, the emperor of Rome, is allied with the Spanish Saracens, with the king of France, King Floire, as Julius Caesar's vassal. Arthur invades Normandy and defeats King Floire in single combat. This upsets Julius Caesar, who comes to battle Arthur and loses in battle sequences that to me are as disappointing as those in Song of Roland.)Finally, we return to Perceval again, who is upset at the death of Arthur and Gawain (he died too). Merlin moves in next door and has Blaise, from the earlier story, write this all down.All of this material shows the hallmarks of being brought together by a single editor. This editor is careful to weave together Robert de Boron's Joseph and Merlin, Chretien's Perceval, and this death of Arthur story. I see no evidence that the Perceval story here was written in any way by Robert de Boron: it seems to be literally Chretien's story streamlined and supplemented with details from Joseph and Merlin. The Perceval story is clearly meant to end with him becoming the Fisher King. I was in complete surprised that more narration persisted afterwards.The Death of Arthur supplement is totally different compared to the Perceval story. I would not be surprised if Robert de Boron wrote this. Indeed, the Joseph, Merlin, and Death of Arthur stories all share the same clumsy style, the same "oral performance" qualities that are singularly absent from the Perceval (lack of detailed and immersive descriptions of settings, lack of characterizations), resulting in unpleasant reading.I encourage you to test what I am saying by looking at the end of the Merlin section. What does it say? Arthur and his barons are sitting there pondering Merlin's words. Perceval has never been mentioned once yet. Now look at the Death of Arthur section (page 156). What is there? Arthur and his barons.So to me, what I see is this: Robert de Boron wrote Joseph, Merlin, and Death of Arthur. I think he got his material from either Chretien's Perceval or from a mutual source. He decided to provide a backstory for the grail, using Merlin as a persistent and prominent character and mythical source for his inventions, and concluded with Geoffrey of Monmouth's Arthurian tale with a new Death of Arthur.Later, an editor took Chretien's Perceval, simplified it, squeezed it between Merlin and Death of Arthur, and made it fit nicely by adding a couple elements from Joseph and Merlin. He then made it fit seamlessly with Death of Arthur too, and thus we got the present trilogy.Only it doesn't fit very seamlessly. The momentum of the Joseph-Merlin-Perceval story halts with Perceval becoming the Fisher King and completing the Grail Quest. That was the narrative started in Joseph, the history of the Grail. Arthur is actually of secondary importance in Joseph-Merlin-Perceval. That the Death of Arthur comes after Perceval feels too "tacked on" and unnecessary. Perceval did it! He won the grail and became the Fisher King!Now let's tell you about the Death of Arthur.It doesn't work as a flowing narrative.Alternatively, Joseph-Merlin-Death of Arthur could be a narrative too. Here, the core story is the rise and fall of Arthur. While all contain core details about the Grail, in Joseph-Merlin-Death of Arthur the grail is of secondary importance, what actually matters is the circumstances leading to Arthur's birth, the establishment of his court, his wars, and his fall.It just doesn't work as a narrative, for me, to have Joseph-Merlin-Perceval-Death of Arthur. Perceval is different (and far superior) to all three, and Death of Arthur just ends up feeling tacked-on.Overall, I was glad to read Perceval again. I was bored by Joseph, Merlin, and Death of Arthur, even while appreciating the additions to Arthurian lore that Robert de Boron contributed: like George Lucas, he's a good ideas man, even if not the best at putting those ideas into a product.While this version of the Perceval story contains a great narrative sequence, I do not like that it omitted Blanchefleur and overall simplified things, for it is not therefore "definitive." It is not THE Perceval story in my mind, which, after having read Chretien's, this version, and the four continuations, I have not yet encountered. Nevertheless, the Perceval story is by far the best of the bunch here.I rate this four stars. It's historically very important for Arthurian lore. For that alone it is a "classic." As a narrative, it is clumsy, for reasons explained above. Robert de Boron's actual writing seems poor: I can forgive him for writing for "oral performance," but I am a reader, and my experience reading most of this material was not satisfying. Furthermore, if Chretien de Troyes was also writing for oral performance, yet includes immersive descriptions of setting and characters, then why could not Robert de Boron? Comparing Robert and Chretien, the latter is an infinitely superior author and I miss him.

A cycle of three -- or, by some counts, four -- Arthurian romances attributed to the poet Robert de Boron (or Borron) is of exceptional importance. It seems to have provided the model for the later Vulgate Cycle, which includes "Lancelot" and "The Quest of the Holy Grail," and its successors, including Thomas Malory''s "Le Morte D'Arthur." Obviously, everyone seriously interested in Arthurian literature will have read it. Wrong. Very wrong.To begin with, there is, unfortunately, direct manuscript evidence for only "Joseph of Arimathea" (the early history of the Grail) and the opening of "Merlin" in verse. What we have for the whole cycle, concluding with "Perceval" (the Grail Quest), and "The Death of Arthur" (as either the conclusion of "Perceval" or a short continuation of the cycle), is a prose redaction. The relationship of this to the work of the original poet in its later portions is uncertain -- assuming that there was a complete version in verse.The prose retelling exists in a variety of manuscripts, only two of which (known as Modena and Didot, the latter famous but textually corrupt) contain the whole collection, and they otherwise differ among themselves. There have been a number of editions of the medieval French texts, based on different manuscripts and editorial principles, so even those with a good reading knowledge of Old French have not necessarily read the same book.For those of us who read only English (at least with any fluency), there has been only the last section, as "The Romance of Perceval in Prose: A Translation of the E Manuscript of the Didot Perceval" by Dell Skeels, published by University of Washington Press in 1961. It was once available in paperback (1966 printing), but is long out of print. Fortunately Skeels resisted the turn-of-the-century models of Sebastian Evans and W.W. Comfort, and turned out workman-like modern English instead of pseudo-Malory. Unfortunately, he provided only half the story (the Quest and the Death of Arthur), and the information provided about the material was limited.Now Nigel Bryant has come riding to the rescue of beleaguered amateur Arthurians and besieged students (sorry, I can't resist the image) with another of his modern language translations. (He has also made available in English the "Perceval" of Chretien de Troyes, and a selection of its numerous continuations {see now the addendum below}, and also the rather odd "Perlesvaus," as "The High Book of the Grail"). Originally published in hardcover as Volume XLVIII of an ongoing Arthurian Studies series, "Merlin and the Grail" is readable, critically astute, and bibliographically up to date (although I have yet to find Skeels in the bibliography or notes.) It is exactly what I longed for a quarter-century ago when trying to make sense of passages in William Roach's 1941 edition of "The Didot Perceval, According to the Manuscripts of Modena and Paris." We have at last a really early version of the origin and wanderings of the Grail, the conceptions and births of Merlin and Arthur, and the King's early reign, and the insertion of the Grail Quest into the traditonal "history" of Arthur's reign.{Addendum May 2018: I haven't looked at this review in too many years, and I now find that should have added something several years ago. Nigel Bryant has since translated, as "The Complete Story of the Grail," Chretien's unfinished story, all four of the verse "Continuations" of Chretien's "Perceval," (complete) plus the two preludes written as what some (like me) would call prequels.}

These are important stories to read, to understand how the ideas of Courtly Romance still affect out time.

Excellent book! I had read "Joseph of Arimathea" in the past, but had always assumed that "Merlin" and "The Grail" were lost. Essential for any Grail/Arthur enthusiasts!!

Amazing story about a handful of Titanic passengers and the disaster that followed. Very well written book which made you almost believe you were among these unfortunate people. A nice summary of the "after life" the ones that survived experienced, and how they too eventually departed. Unfortunately, lots of mistakes were made leading up to that night when Titanic hit that iceberg. Glad to read that many maritime changes were made as a result of this disaster. This book and the movie "A night to remember" and "Titanic", seem to keep reminding one that life can be short, and unexpected regardless of personal status, or wealth. The whole Titanic incident is a haunting reality of life's thin threat, and how that can sever at any given moment. Sad also is the number of people that died, due to outdated laws and mistakes. One can't take any of that for granted when one boards a vessel even today. Not recommended for reading before taking a trip on a ship across the seas. It will have you counting the life boats on board as a minimum.

When I was 12 years old, I met with then-85-year-old Edwina Celia (Troutt) McKenzie who had survived the sinking of the Titanic. She told me the tale not only of the famous night to remember but also of a different time in history when society was obsessively class conscious and opulence was revered. As a middle class 60's kid from California, this period was difficult for me to imagine. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I saw this book title and bought it on a whim. I thought that it looked kind of boring, but I was very favorably surprised. Most of all I enjoyed the descriptions of various high society people's lives at the turn of the century and seeing the irony of how, for some of them, all they cherished & obsessed about in life was quickly rendered moot by the chance presence of an iceberg along the course of the most magnificent ship in the world.

This book was pretty interesting, I liked getting to know the passengers better. I especially liked the pictures of various places on the ship. Wow, the layers of richness in the designs almost hurt the eye, they really were into "a lot more is better" back then. Seeing the likenesses of a lot of the privileged made the reality more human. I really think that most of the people thought they were going to be saved, or there would have been a lot more fighting for the lifeboats. Nobody pays much attention to the fact that 2/3 of the steerage class perished, and that the gates were locked to keep them below! I am from Denver, and I was heartened that Molly (Margaret) Brown worked hard to help the poor survivors after being rescued. This was a well researched and interesting book!

There have been several books written on the sinking of the Titanic and this one concentrated on the lives of the first-class passengers which some reviewers didn't like. However, I found the book to contain snippets on other class passengers as well. The book begins with an introduction to the individuals that will be featured later on. I found it interesting to read how the passengers dressed for their evening meal, what they ate, and what they did to amuse themselves. Also of interest is the amount of luggage they carried on board and the amount of precious jewelry.The book goes into considerable detail regarding protocol regarding who benefits from being lowered from the stricken vessel and the survival of those in the water. Thankfully the Carpathia came along to the rescue and it was encouraging how those on board catered to the Titanic survivors to make them comfortable.J. Bruce Ismay is often criticized for ignoring the warning of icebergs up ahead and instead of slowing down he ordered the vessel to increase its speed. Other what ifs such as the Californian ship that ignored the distress signals of the Titanic gets one to speculate how many others could have been saved since it was much closer to the Titanic than was the Carpathia.The book concludes as to what became of several of the survivors in their future lives. Some lived only a short time thereafter while others reached the age beyond one hundred or into their nineties. If you would like to learn more about this epic tragedy this book should be of interest to you.

2.75 stars“Men who are fun to go shopping with are rarely the marrying kind.” —THIS is insulting. Trying to pass this information off as scientific fact in order to out someone is shameful. The author also used this subject’s bond to his mother as proof of his homosexuality.The author’s zeal to recreate is a study in clunkiness. —These two might have shared a table at breakfast. Both had eighth cousins who owned ice cream parlors, which would have given them something to talk about.—He likewise has no qualms interpreting the comments of a dead man: “This richly ponderous writing style, along with Gracie’s habit of pushing his Chickamauga book on other passengers, has caused him to be characterized as the club bore amid the clublike décor of the Titanic’s smoking room. Kindly old Isidor Straus, a co-owner of Macy’s department store in New York, had accepted a copy of Gracie’s book and then returned it a few days later expressing “intense interest” in having read it. Since even the most dedicated of Civil War buffs find Gracie’s detailed descriptions of troop movements at Chickamauga to be daunting, Straus was undoubtedly merely being polite.” Sir, you don’t know that, and if you don’t know that, don’t present it as fact.While the book does improve in the second half, these errors hobble the book’s impact. This sloppy logic belongs in an undergrad’s rough draft and not as a published author’s final copy.

I managed to slog through to #8 before the chapter title '[Mentally Strong People] Don't Make The Same Mistakes Over and Over' finally brought me to a stop. If you suffer from mental illness, PTSD from childhood abuse, and/or systemic oppression, this book will trigger you. The author makes vague statements about getting therapy and cutting contact with abusers, but spends the rest of the time victim-blaming and telling questionable anecdotes about parents and children. There are valuable tidbits, but they're not worth excavation from a book that makes everyday human mistakes (especially stemming from disability and illness) feel like capitulation to mental 'weakness'.As others have said, the ideas here are very basic but definitely not presented well for a beginner in self-help, especially a depressed one. Check out the sites 'Out of the FOG' and 'The Body is not an Apology' for a better start.

Read the other 1 and 2 star reviews. They hit the nail on the head about the content within this book. Most of the book are stories about death and disease and how those people overcame those misfortunes. This is no joke. I'm usually an upbeat and positive person, reading this book actually put me in a state of depression. It just drones on and on with one horrible story after another. It does however make some good points about making yourself mentally strong. It just takes way too long to get to the point of it all with the stories.

Its a lovely book that mirrors the style of the book The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday. And if you love The Obstacle is the Way, The Power of Habit, and The Motivation Manifesto...then you'll love Amy Morin's 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do. It contains 13 powerful lessons filled with great wisdom and astounding stories from many amazing leaders and entrepreneurs . The book teaches you how to perceive your problems and people from a different angle and from a more expansive perspective. The book also allows for empowerment on how we perceive and tackle obstacles in a more practical and creative light and allows us to question our fears. Most of us make life harder for ourselves through false perceptions and limited beliefs based on irrational fears and veils of illusions. The book truly does empower a person to really look past beyond our internal conflicts to pursue our dreams and happiness from a different approach. I've reread this book many times as much as Marcus Aurelius Meditations. The book teaches that through change of mentality, change of perception, through perseverance, patience, embrace failures as if they were accolades of achievement, and strong determination we can carry out an amazing successful life. We live in a world where everything is measured and dogmatism and ego is highly valued over true happiness and humility. Our wealth, our appearances, our job performance, our skills, our wallets, our possessions, our lives....everything is a competition within our society and as so it goes...people rush into life to achieve the perfect spouse, the pressure to thrive through unethical purposes in the work environments, and others live life aimlessly pursuing mediocre activities like gossip and trivial matters and in the end you feel lost, miserable, but unhappy. This book teaches a person to embrace their mistakes, to never give your anger away to senseless people or matters, and how other powerful and influential figures have bounced back from setbacks and afflictions in life. The author herself shares an amazing story regarding her own struggles in life. Its a book that I never get tired of rereading and you'd have to read it to understand why.

I was asked to be an early reviewer for 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, and to focus on which of the 13 Things I found most helpful or applicable to my own life.Amy says she’s the only person in the psychology industry who is talking about mental strength on a global level, and I’m delighted that’s she’s bringing the weight of science to this topic (likening mental strength to something you can improve with practice and discipline just like physical health).She encourages readers to adopt certain mental strength-building strategies by first looking at what mentally strong people don’t do.Here’s the full list:1. They Don’t Waste Time Feeling Sorry for Themselves2. They Don’t Give Away Their Power.3. They Don’t Shy Away from Change4. They Don’t Waste Energy on Things They Can’t Control5. They Don’t Worry About Pleasing Everyone6. They Don’t Fear Taking Calculated Risks7. They Don’t Dwell on the Past8. They Don’t Make the Same Mistakes Over and Over9. They Don’t Resent Other People’s Success10. They Don’t Give Up After the First Failure11. They Don’t Fear Alone Time12. They Don’t Feel the World Owes Them Anything13. They Don’t Expect Immediate ResultsI thought each of one of the above is important, but given my assignment I’m going to focus on thing they don’t do #6: They Don’t Fear Taking Calculated Risks.Amy says that all too often people stop themselves from taking a risk because it evokes a strong fear response. The problem is we don’t even investigate the thoughts and beliefs that triggered the fear response in the first place.We simply decide not to think about it or its consequences at all. And without understanding the beliefs that created the fear, or the potential outcomes of taking a risk even when we do, we end up completely avoiding risky ideas or dreams altogether.The bottom line is, most of us don’t really invest much time calculating which risks to take and which risks to avoid. Instead, we base our decisions on emotion or habit.If it feels too scary, we avoid the risk.But here’s where it gets interesting: Amy tells us if we’re excited about the possible benefits, we’re more likely to work through the challenges that the risk presents. So we really need to be willing to work with our fears in order to transform them.What I know for sure is that everything we want is outside of our comfort zone.To quote Amy Morin from 13 Things, “If we only take risks that make us the most comfortable, we’re likely missing out on some great opportunities. Taking calculated risks often mean the difference between living a mediocre life and living an extraordinary life.”I found Amy’s book helpful in so many ways, and I highly encourage you to read 13 Things: she provides many, many helpful checklists, tools, tips and strategies for becoming mentally strong and living the life of your dreams.In the chapter about taking calculated risks, she even provides a comprehensive list of questions to ask yourself to help create your own risk/benefit analysis.If you have ever felt stuck or small in the past and want a new way of evaluating clear next steps for building your mental strength, you’ll love this book!

This is a very important book. As my father, who developed type 1 diabetes at age 55, said to me when I was embarking on a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, "Any diabetic can tell you that it's carbohydrates that will kill you." I was eventually scared off the Atkins diet by my doctor who said it was ultimately dangerous - even though my blood test results while on the diet could not have been more perfect. With this book, Taubes has given me the knowledge to go back to eating the way that I felt was best for me.I will warn that anyone reading this book will be angered by learning how a "consensus" of scientists, who based their theories on cherry-picked statistics, felt they could ignore conflicting data, discredit any researcher who opposed them and ultimately persuade the government, with the help of the press, into forcing the public to adopt a diet that has made most of us overweight and unhealthy.This story eerily parallels the current subject of global warming and I hope that Taubes will eventually want to challenge the conventional wisdom underpinning that as well.

This is an incredible book that, for me, completely redefined what constituted a healthy diet.I completely believed the calories in/calories out model of dieting: that is, if you consume more calories than you expend, you will put on weight, and that you lose weight by expending more calories than you consume. That model was simple and made a lot of sense. But, Taubes convincingly argues, it is not just too simplistic, it is wrong.What matters isn't the quantity of calories consumed, but their quality. Rice, potatoes, flour (including cakes, bread, pasta, etc.), sugar, and other refined, easily digestible carbohydrates are converted to simple sugars in our digestive systems. In turn, this sugar enters our blood streams and raises our blood sugar levels. Since high blood sugar is dangerous and fatal if not addressed, our bodies respond by producing insulin which causes that blood sugar to be converted into fat and stored in our fat cells. This is all basic high-school biology, and completely uncontroversial. Taubes, however, goes further and cites study after study that implicate the recommended "healthy" low-fat, high-carb diets as a primary cause of obesity, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers and a whole range of other health problems. He explains the mechanisms that lead to these diseases, and punches holes in the accepted wisdom behind recommended "healthy" dietary guidelines.I was on a long, domestic flight when I read an in-flight magazine article by Taubes about this book back in early 2008. I was very skeptical, because what he had written flew in the face of what I had come to believe about health and diet, but I was intrigued because of the claims he made about the links between diet and hypertension. I had recently been diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) and my doctor had put me on a course of medication to bring it under control. He had also told me to cut out as much sodium from my diet as possible. When I asked my doctor what I needed to do to come off the medication completely, he told me there was nothing I could do and that I probably needed it for the rest of my life. I was in my early 40's and didn't like the sound of that at all! So I bought a copy of this book and read it from cover to cover.It was a revelation!He cited studies which indicated that hypertension was caused by eating a diet rich in easily digestible carbohydrates. Such a diet raises blood sugar, which in turn raises insulin - in order to convert that sugar to fat, thereby reducing blood sugar, and storing the resulting fat in the bodies fat cells. However, the research indicated that insulin also had other effects on the body, one of which was to cause the kidneys to reabsorb more water back into the blood stream. In other words, insulin acted as an anti-diuretic. The resulting excess water increased blood pressure. (One of the drugs in my blood pressure medication was a diuretic, so it clearly worked by reducing the amount of water in my bloodstream.) At the same time, Taubes pointed out that blood sodium levels, which conventional wisdom claimed was the cause of that excess water (again, without a great deal of evidence to support it), was quite easily regulated by the kidneys and passed out of the body in urine.This made a lot of sense to me, and so I started a diet that the book indicated would be healthier: one without starchy food, but with fish, meat, dairy products and green vegetables. Within days, I started getting muscle cramps and dizzy spells, and saw my doctor about the problem. It seemed that the combination of the diet and my hypertension medication was giving me low blood pressure and dehydration symptoms. He halved my medication dosage, instructed me to buy a blood pressure monitor, and to come off the medication altogether if my symptoms continued - but to check my blood pressure regularly. In the end, I stopped taking the medication, and my blood pressure was routinely around 118/75. So much for having to take the medication for the rest of my life.But other effects were happening to me while I was on this diet. I started losing weight (I was, I'll admit, slightly obese when I started the diet), yet I never felt hungry, and could seemingly eat as much as I liked, without ever feeling bloated or full. This was supposedly one of the primary benefits of the diet and one of the main points of the book, but I was still surprised with the results.Taubes' research also predicted that such a diet would do the following to my blood lipids: it would lower triglyceride levels, raise HDL ("good" cholesterol) levels and possibly raise LDL ("bad" cholesterol). Over the course of a year, the blood work performed by my doctor backed this up: I significantly lowered my triglyceride levels, significantly raised my HDL levls - both unequivocally good things - while slightly increasing my LDL levels. Taubes' studies had indicated that HDL levels had a strong inverse correlation with coronary heart disease incidence (that is, the higher the HDL levels, the lower the risk of coronary heart disease), while LDL had a weak, positive correlation, so I wasn't too concerned about the increase in LDL.So, it worked for me.However, this is not a book primarily about diet. It might be more accurate to say that it's a book about the science of diet, nutrition and health, and Taubes is happy to acknowledge that we still need to do a lot more research on the subject, but without any preconceptions. Indeed, throughout the book, Taubes points out the lies, errors, misinterpretations and failed critical thinking that led to the current dietary recommendations of a predominantly low-fat, high-carb diet. If those recommendations are right, he asks, why are we seeing such an explosion in obesity, hypertension and type 2 diabetes diagnoses?He certainly doesn't claim to have all the answers, but he does put a lot of pseudo-scientific diet & health claims to the sword - and he explains why. He convincingly argues that Ancel Keys' "lipid hypothesis" - that diets that are high in fat, and high in saturated fat in particular, cause coronary heart disease - not only has no evidence to support it, but is contradicted by the evidence that is available. Taubes also demonstrates that in all likelihood saturated fat, far from being unhealthy, is actually an essential component of our diets.I highly recommend this book!

I am a layman. Your everyday average person. Not a dieter, nutritionalist, bodybuilder, in the medical field, overweight, underweight. Just the average person trying to figure out what I should eat and why.Doing some Google "research" I came across this book. I was intrigued because it appeared to be an honest book and not promoting "this" or "that." A book about the science and history of our nutrition. So I gave it a chance.Wow. BLOWN AWAY! My jaw was dropped most of the book. I found myself rereading aloud passage after passage in a furious breath to my husband. I was shocked at how we as citizens have been lied to when it comes to our dietary needs by those we have trusted.I wish I could get everyone I know and love to read this book. I want to share all my newfound knowledge with anyone that will listen. It's such a hard topic to discuss with people though. Unless you read this book what I would be saying would sound crazy. People won't believe what I say. They have to read it themselves.There are many parts I skimmed because it was over my head. It's a book that I will revisit often. Life changing. Now I feel very sad that I know the truth and I see the constant lies bombarding us everywhere. I feel helpless when I see my fellow man making what they think are "healthy choices" for themselves and their families and I know the truth.I just hope more doctors, scientist, journalist, people in power positions become brave enough to go against the grain of the mainstream and enlighten the rest of the people that will never read this book.
